Why beetle leaf or Paan (as popularly called) chew after meal in India : Ancient tradition still continue ...
It is very common to have Paan (beetle leaf) Shop in the vicinity of hotel/restaurants across India. People, after a meal, goes to Paan shop for beetle leaf (paan) to aid digestion. Its an ancient tradition in India wherein people used to have beetle leaf after a meal for ease of digestion and the tradition being followed till date in the most part of India.
As per Ayurveda (Ancient Indian medicine) , the heart shaped beetle leaf has digestive juices/properties and aids digestion. It also works as mouth freshner and has cooling effect as Mint/Menthol wrapped inside the beetle leaf.
The typical paan/beetle leaf contains reddish katha (made from a khair tree) & white Choona(Lime paste), fennel, coconut powder, gulkand (Rose petal jam), clove, cardamom, menthol , beetle nut (optional), cherry stuffed inside the heart shaped beetle leaf making it juicy and luscious in taste to chew after the meal.
