Vyborg. Ancient cultural center of the Leningrad region.

This spring I managed to visit Vyborg. It is a small town located on the shore of the Vyborg Gulf, located in the north-eastern part of the Gulf of Finland.

Vyborg is an old city, and very many buildings that have survived to date date back to the 15-16 centuries.

Vyborg, founded in the Middle Ages by the Swedes, since 2010 is the only historic settlement on the territory of the Leningrad region. Until 1940 it was the second largest city in Finland.

In total, more than 300 different monuments are concentrated in Vyborg: architectural, historical, sculptural, archaeological, landscape art.

Initially, the city was laid as a fortress. The first name, under which the city is mentioned in the annals, was the Scandinavian name of Vyborg, the Swedish knights named the new castle, founded in 1293 on the site of the destroyed Karelian island.

Despite its rich history, and a huge number of architectural monuments, today the city needs a serious restoration. Houses crumble, in the central part of the city many suffered from fires, but were not even fenced off.

For my arrival, I can take a walk around the city and visit Vyborg Castle.
It hosts several museums and inter-active exhibitions. One of which I visited. I think in more detail about them in next posts on steemit.
