Art & Truth: Mozart by Dora Stock

The following is an excerpt from my book Martyrs of Art: The Poison of Idealism:

“As for his appearance, the actual Mozart was ‘under 5 feet tall, terribly thin, and with a mass of blonde hair.’ How freakishly fitting is this description of him! I cannot help, whenever I listen to his music, but to envisage him this way, as opposed to the way he commonly appears in unrealistic paintings.”

The featured image in this post was drawn from life by German artist Dora Stock in 1789, just a couple of years before Mozart’s death. It is a great instance in which the medium of art was properly utilized. Stock drew realistically, blending art with truth, something most artists refuse to do.
