How to Simplify the Head (for artists)
The Human head is a complex shape to deal with. It is made up of different shapes that come together to form what we call the head. This complex shape is of relevance to us artists as we are meant to replicate it. From simple observation of the head, I have found a simple way of rendering this complex figure.
The head in itself is made up of the Cranial mass and the jaw. The Cranial mass as the brain box. These two constitute the entire head. And I like to like to simply them with interlocking ovals.
The first for the Cranial mass and the second for the jaw
This method would help handle the complexity of head rotation and lots more when properly understood. The use of a center line on the face cutting across the entire head could help show orientation. Again cross contour lines marking specific landmarks on the face also shown the orientation.
The first portion handles the region from the hair line to the brow ridge.
The second portion from the brow ridge to the bottom of the nose.
The third portion from the bottom of the nose to the jaw.
From this we see the face clearly broken in thirds. These measurement would be your guide when placing facial features so pay attention to them and memorise them.
Planes
Rendering the head in ovals doesn't get the job done, sadly. We still need to model this 3-dimensional form with planes. The head has distinct planes, front planes, side planes and top planes. Showing light and shade using these basic idea becomes easier.
Light hitting the top plane of the head casts a shadow in the plane of the brow ridge and under the nose.
The head has subtle planes, think this when rendering the head.
Anatomy of the skull.
Finally, you can't be simplifying a form without first knowing the form. It is important to do studies on the skull itself and not making stuff up. What you know and understand is easier to manipulate and call for from imagination.
Get a good skull reference and study the anatomy of the skull, paying attention to how they affect the surface forms!
