Romeo and Juliet, But ... Did these characters really exist or is it just a legend?
The story of Romeo and Juliet is known all over the world thanks to the work that Shakespeare wrote and that premiered for the first time in 1595.
Maybe it was an invention, perhaps, a story that became a legend, which has become super famous everywhere, in any language!
Romeo and Juliet (1597) is a tragedy by William Shakespeare.
It tells the story of two young lovers who, despite the opposition of their families, rivals to each other, decide to fight for their love to the point of getting married clandestinely; however, the pressure of that rivalry and a series of fatalities lead to the suicide of the two lovers. This relationship between its protagonists has turned them into the archetype of the so-called star-crossed lovers.
It is one of the most popular works of the English author and, together with Hamlet and Macbeth, the one that has been represented the most times.
Although the story is part of a long tradition of tragic romances that go back to antiquity, the plot is based on the English translation (The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet, 1562) of an Italian story by Matthew Bandello, by Arthur Brooke , which was based on the French translation made by Pierre Boaistuau in 1559.
For his part, in 1582, William Painter made a prose version from Italian and French stories, which was published in the collection of stories Palace of Pleasure.
But ... did these characters really exist or is it just a legend?
