Art for peace - my glass painting "They want to win"

in #art7 years ago (edited)

The IPAX (International Peace Art Exhibiton) was a project by Roger Erasmy († 2015), the leader of an artist group called Dali's heirs, inspired by the former president of the European commission Jacques Santer. The original Exhibition took place at the Reial Cercle Artistic in Barcelona.

As amazing as it sounds, in 2010 the exhibition could be brought to my home town Viechtach, a picturesque little tourist town in the Bavarian Forest in Germany. The title of my painting "Sie wollen Gewinn'" is actually a play on words and can't really be translated. It means They want to win, but also They want profit. Essentially it means, those in power (or seeking to gain power) want war and win for profit.

In the so called western world, we take peace for granted, but when you look at it, its a very fragile construction in my opinion. We are lucky, that (right now) there is more profit in peace than war.. plus, that can always be fought else where (I'm being cynical)

As usual, I start with a drawing on paper, which is "cleaned up" until I'm satisfied with the composition and detail

After that I draw it with a graphite pencil onto the glass and finish it with watercolor and oils as explained here. This is the finished piece on glass:

Normally I make a unique frame for each of my glass originals, but I had found this vintage frame, which to me fits perfectly to give the whole thing the bittersweet, cynical appearance I was looking for

All of your worknis always so full of detail, that i leave it for a time in a day when i can look and analyze it for longer.

Love how that skull amd dove are binded with a seamless transition. Love how that frame looks like a medal for a victory ar war, those little ribnons that intersect... and those tiny drops of blood.

All of these seemingly irrelevant details build up yet another masterfull piece of art.

I have two qestions however.

  1. What is HMM.
  2. How long does it take to work out the concept and all elements or is it something that gets added in a process.

Thank you so much, for yet another really great comment! I can see, you really do take a close look. I do too with your works but often can't find adequate words... or what I want to say seems silly..

In answer to your questions: its the roman number MMH backwards, the year of creation 2010

I work out the rough concept first, as its difficult to change things later in the painting. You sort of have to think it ahead. Not much different from what you do actually... you too have to consider all kinds of things first.. light, props, poses, composition...

Sometimes I have an almost finished picture in my head in a moment and sometimes it takes weeks or even month to get an idea into a form...

Was expecting similar answer to this. You can not estimate "how long" probably it was my wrongly formed question. I know you can not change things and even fix slight mistakes in hinter glass technique. Which i can do by the way and most of my work is actually pretty spontaneous :) So here i do not envy you as i can fix many mistakes in Photoshop which i also do :) That is why it excites me even more, as i would never be able to do what you are doing due to the fact that i probably have a lack of attention syndrome or something similar it is called :)
So one question still remains, if it is not a secret, why reverse MMH, i am aware it is painted in reverse on glass but knowing you it can not be you forgot and made a mistake lol

Because if you won't tell me i will be thinking that you did this on purpose as 0102 = 0+1+0+2 = 3 Which is dove for the holy trinity.

Even with photoshop, you need a decent photo to start with. I'm sure you do a lot of things intuitively right. Its like we don't have to consciously think I'm moving my arm now in this direction and have my hand grab this cup of coffee... one just does it. With time one gets more experienced and can drink from the cup without spilling half of it... or take a perfect photo :-)

As for the number I'm afraid you give me more credit than I deserve. It happens frequently, that I just write something in the right direction and then it gets turned around... and then I just leave it. Although I like your interpretation very much!

I guess you are right, i probably just tend to think it is intuition. but again, what intuition is if not an echo of previous experiences :) Like you with the numbers :)

I love this! The skull meaning both life and death to me. Then the little bird looks both quizzical in facial expression and victorious with wings spread. And the bra adds whimsy !

Thank you so very much, to share your view on this painting. To me its one of the most important subjects there is and I spend a lot of time thinking about it. That's why I think my painting turned out rather complex..

I use whimsical elements, not only because its my nature, but also to attract the viewer and get his/her attention. We are so used to see pictures of terrible events, that often, one seems to just replace another. Therefore the artist has to find a way, to open a door and surprise.

With the two openings this week, we talked a lot about our art of course and what role it plays in peoples lives. I would like to see mine as an exit sign on our highway of everyday routines.. not to a rest area, but to a scenic route. A winding road into the mountains or along a coast... where both sides of the brain are needed and thus harmonized. You need your mind, to focus on the road and steer your vehicle safely, while your emotions are overwhelming you, be it by a deep dark canyon or a spectacular view.

Beautiully done. Great work of art. Peace is always more profitable in the long term for all, but usually those in power are short sighted.

You are absolutely right. Things being good for all is unfortunately not a big concern of power crazy and self centered, greedy individuals..

very creative work.; I really like this painting. """here is more profit in peace than war"" awesome view. i think Art can spread peace and love in noawayds world. I am an Artist and draw with pencil and ballpoint pen and really hope famouse Artist like you have a look on my wall and tell me your view. I am doing my best to Master painting skills. thanks in advance. I follow you now.

Thank you for your kind comment. We can only hope, that the equation will always be in favor of peace. Unfortunately art inspires only those who are already open to the message. There is still a long way I'm afraid.

I can support myself with my work as an artist, but I'm not famous. Nevertheless I thank you for your invitation to look at your beautiful blog. I think your work has a lot of potential and you seem very driven. Maybe one day, you will be the famous one :-)

Beautiful, also with the Death I feel well in your paintings:-) can be it's because you have this warm colours in your style

Hm... other than in this one, Death isn't really my subject. Wonder what creates that association... Glad you like it though, thank you :-)
