My First Clay Sculpture

in #artzone6 years ago

Let me preface this by saying that I've never sculpted anything in my life, so go easy on me! This is something that I've been interested in for a long time but have never actually taken the time to learn.

I'm hoping that I can look back on this in a couple of years with a giggle!

I have no idea what this guy is supposed to be. Just made it up out of my head. I definitely learned some lessons working on this head, and will apply them to my next attempt.

For one, I need reference material or a mirror! Once you start trying to sculpt with no experience, you really begin to realize that you have no idea how one feature of the subject merges into the other.

I have a friend who is a master sculptor and has worked in the toy industry for years. He has offered to teach me before but I haven't really wanted to impose myself. Maybe I will give it a shot, and give him a call!

Sort:

He looks like an Asian warrior. Pretty cool :)

Thanks! It actually started off as an attempt to make a samurai type character (With a huge nose!) but I started to really screw up the eyes and kind of just started to make it a crazy looking guy.

He was also a lot more jowly to start with because I wanted to make him an old ma but I am not skilled enough yet to add lots of features.

Well, just keep at it. We can only get better with practice! Amanda blows me away with her skills, but she's been doing it for years.

Somehow missed this post scrolling through... Ah what can you do. I'd say that looks great for a first sculpt, with no reference to boot!

As it happens, I've just started sculpting too -- with soft clay for children :)
Simple shapes, just as a form of quick mental exercise (that's my excuse!)

Delightful stuff, I may actually need to get some small tools if I want to sculpt a tiny face at some point (and I do!)

Hehe, pretty cool. One of the things that I am working on is learning to forgive myself for not being a super genius at everything. It is one of the things that I've gotten out of the hours of meditation that I've accumulated. I am super hard on myself!

Sculpting is an awesome way to get out creative frustrations.. There are no rules unless you impose them on yourself!

Cool sculptures by the way. I think I will try that myself; quickly shaping items to exercise the mind. I will probably come up with some funny cartoony stuff.
