Ann Baumgartner Carl of Kilmarnock, VA was the first American woman to fly a jet! She flew the Bell YP-59A jet fighter at Wright Field on Oct. 14th 1944 while serving with the Women Air Service Pilots (WASP). Her first flight was in a J-3 Piper Cub in 1940 after which she declared "This is what I was made for". Ann was the only WASP to serve as a test pilot and became a personal friend of Orville Wright's. She was inducted into the hall of fame in 2000 for her influential and inspirational life as an aviator.
