My Homes by the Sea
My two homes by the sea. My first home on LI was in Rocky Point(1951-75) on Culross Dr. with my backyard the beach on the Sound. My last home on the Island was in Long Beach(2000-06) on Minnesota Ave a block from the Ocean. My Danish/Germany ancestors(Vikings) came from the village of Blexen in today's Germany on the North Sea where they sailed & fished the sea after building their own seafaring crafts. My history on Long Island is as follows:
Though I was born(1949) in a hospital in Manhattan (Hell's Kitchen) which my parents called the City. I was conceived on Long Island where my parents lived in what they called the "Projects" in Elmhurst, Queens (post WWII housing). I only lived about a year there until we moved to my Grandfather's summer resort (Luerssen's Pavilion) in Rocky Point on the beach 60 miles from the City on the North Shore of Long Island. We stayed in the pavilion for about a year while my father built our home next-door up on the bluff just west of the pavilion with a beautiful view of the beach, the sound & Connecticut between Culross Dr. & Hallock Landing Rd. I spent most of my first 25 years of life enjoying the beach as my backyard with a view beyond words. From than until 2006 I lived in the following towns on Long Island except for about 5 years on the mainland: Calverton, Rocky Point, East Setauket, New Hyde Park & Long Beach. So I started in Manhattan between rivers & the ocean than onto the Sound & ended at the Ocean when I retired at 57 & moved to Salt Lake City to enjoy the desert to the west & the Rocky Mountains to the east. However, Long Island with all my youthful memories will always be my home.
