Beautiful Beer Labels #4: Gulden Draak
Hi Steemians,
In this series I am looking for the most beautiful, arty, smart or interesting beer labels. We all know beers taste great, but quite often we don't pay enough attention to the label design. That's a shame, because a good label can really make the beer experience more complete.
This week: dragons! With Gulden Draak by Brouwerij Van Steenberge
About the label
The white bottle with a golden dragon and red letters on a black banner is probably one of the most recognisable beer bottles around the world. You can literally spot it immediately in just about any bar fridge and on any shelf in your favourite beer store.
I also like the reference to the city of Ghent. On top of the big Belfry Tower you have a golden dragon that you can spot from miles away. So we have a combination of a land mark and a famous beer in one. Here is a picture of the tower with the original dragon:
About the beer
As you can expect from a dragon beer, this one is quite heavy. It is a high fermentation beer for which they use wine yeast to do the second fermentation.
This beer is good for various occasions. I would recommend it as a dessert or along with a good plate of cheese.
You can also use it to cook for example "stoverij" or "Flemish carbonnade stew" or to marinate your meat before a barbecue.
It has a lovely amber colour with a sweet-bitter taste with dark chocolate tones. That is also why it is often served along with chocolates.
There is also a bit of a vanilla & banana like tone. Since banana yeast is the primary yeast for the beer, next to the wine yeast later on. The wine yeast brings a soft fruity accent as well.
Brewery: Van Steenberge
Beer style: Barley Wine
Alcohol: 10,5%
