Omnipollo's SHPLOING!! Mango S'mores IPA Review

in #beer7 years ago (edited)

Omnipollo is a world renowned Swedish brewery that travels to different breweries across the globe to brew their beers. I found this beer to be interesting because it is also a "gypsy" brewery, the same as Stillwater Artisanal which I reviewed yesterday.

I just have to say I cannot wait to make it to Sweden, I appreciate the country's forward thinking and believe it will continue to make substantial contributions to culture, technology, and I am glad to say beer!

Lets take a look shall we? Sphloing!!

Appearance:

A very eye catching logo. The beer itself was very bright with a refreshing deepness. While the glass was clean, there were bubbles clinging to the glass, and medium-large sized bubbles on the head. This indicates a bit too much head space in the can, allowing more co2 to leave solution than normal. I notice this in my own beers when I carb to a desired level, then remove the co2 completely. After a few days, the once desired level of co2 volumes in solution gets equalized with the increasing head space of the keg and creates larger bubbles that have a habit of clinging. Either way the only thing to worry about with excessive head space in the can is possible oxidation, and there was none to be found.

Aroma:
This one was KILLER. if there were a SHPLOING!! bath soap, it would stay permanently stocked at my house. Lemongrass and bright orange zest dominate the sharper notes while toasty graham cracker and mango hold the backbone.

Flavor:
Solid, it is surprisingly less sweet than other non lactose (milk sugar) NEIPAs that i've tried. The reason this puzzles me is because when you add any simple sugar to a beer, it helps dry it out and makes it less sweet because simple sugars are nearly 100% fermentable, which increases the overall ratio of fermentable sugars in the beer. This is common practice in imperial/double IPAs due to the amount of malts in the beer; the brewers add simple sugars to raise the ABV without adding too many unfermentables. Lactose on the other hand is non fermentable to most strains of yeast, allowing it to quickly add body and a milky sweetness to beers. Milkshake (aka lactose) IPAs are becoming very popular now. Anyways, this beer must have been brewed very dry to begin with because it is very balanced and lacks any cloying sweetness which I appreciate. It has a crisp, sharp, fruity dankness which definitely feels like Mosaic hops taking front and center. The main fruit characteristic is mangos and as far as the whole s'mores thing I would say that is just marketing. It DID have a slight toasty background aroma though I'll give it that.

Mouthfeel:
This one seemed more crisp and less viscous than most beers of this style I try. The cool refreshment shined over the expected pillowy smoothness, they likely favored a higher sulfate to chloride ratio which really made the hop flavors sharp.

Overall I am stoked on this beer, even though I feel the s'mores thing is a bit gimmicky. This Swedish brewery is demonstrating that they can definitely hang, and it makes me excited! You can expect some reviews of Omnipollo in the future.

Until next time! Please follow, upvote, comment and tune in for more reviews tomorrow. I am definitely going to include some Asheville GEMS in my next post! Thanks to all in the steemit community and cheers!

@mk40 @ocd @craftbeer @buzzbeergeek @costopher @meesterboom get at me if you all want to talk some more beer and I am beginning to think that bottle trading might be a fun idea!
