Vioxx killed nearly 30,000 people before it was recalled. It was linked to a significantly higher risk of heart attack and heart attack deaths, along with a couple of dozen other serious side effects.

Bad stuff.

So it was pulled in 2004.

Some time later, Big Pharma got caught out again. This time, it was over Ibuprofen.

Reuters wrote the news this way, as they reported on a study published in the prestigious British medical journal Lancet.

“Long-term high-dose use of painkillers such as ibuprofen or diclofenac is “equally hazardous” in terms of heart attack risk as use of the drug Vioxx, which was withdrawn due to its potential dangers, researchers said on Thursday.”

As a professor of clinical pharmacology said, as published by Reuters, “powerful drugs may have serious harmful effects”.

So what are the natural pain-killing alternatives?

Long term, high dose use of anything is probably bad for you. I mean you can kill yourself by drinking too much water and just a short term high dose can do that. The problem isn't Ibuprofen, the problem is that it was taken in high doses for a long time.

Ibuprofen is not good for you, period. Having worked in the medical manufacturing industry for 9.5 yrs, I have witnessed numerous recalls before the product were released to market, due to supplier quality issues and the precursors being impostor. Try reading the FDA pink, white and yellow sheets if you get bored.

The specific things you mention (manufacturing problems in the early days of the drugs existence) have nothing to do with how dangerous Ibuprofin is today. All I'm saying is that if you have a headache and you take an ibuprofen for it, it isn't going to decrease your quantity or quality of life. If you are popping them 6 at a time are taking them every day for long periods of time then it may very well cause you harm. That's true of lots of most things.

Awesome to get insider experience shared here, thank you!

Thank you for raising some awareness. Like some comments already pointed out, normally you don't use ibu long term. But i just realized in my social environment, that everyone is popping those pills, instead of fighting the cause of the pain.

Since they're pain killers, I imagine some people use them quite often.
Addressing the cause of the pain is much better for us, but less profitable for drug companies.
