Warriors Bike ride NYC 2016--The Crank Stars
How many of you have seen the cult classic film, "The Warriors"? This film dates from the 1970's era when NYC was populated by numerous gangs and each had their own style, colors, or attire. The gangs went to war with each other frequently, but after a peace summit in the Bronx leads to murder, one gang that was accused of the murder, has to travel overnight through multiple turfs all the way from the Bronx to safety in their home turf in Coney Island.
So imagine this movie...but turned into a bike ride! Every couple of years in NYC, the bike group Track or Die, hosts a Warriors Fun ride. This themed ride is actually a scavenger hunt and 2016 was the 2nd annual ride. It was super fun!
Basically, you formed a "gang" with friends and coordinated your colors, theme or outfits. All of the gangs met up at Van Courtland Park in the Bronx. The ride started at 9pm and throughout the night, we had a set time to complete a list of tasks for each borough. For example, take a photo with a firefighter or you would have to ride to a listed location to pick up something, etc. For each task that you completed, a designated person in the group would upload the photo to Instagram and the gang would receive points. It especially helped to have folks in your group who were familiar with each borough as you could split up and complete the tasks faster.
My group was the Crank Stars and of course we chose the Steven Universe symbol. I wore a blue light up tutu for fun!
The ride was super fun and so many people in other groups dropped along the way. Riding from the Bronx, through Harlem, downtown Manhattan and into Brooklyn is an epic journey.
We only lost 1 person but when we finally made it to Coney Island the next morning, I could NOT feel my legs. I wanted to collapse on the beach but it wasn't over yet.
We had to do play tug of war against other gangs for a whopping amount of points.
At the end of it all, the Crank Stars won the challenge and got to take home $1200 (I think? Cant remember! LOL) We were even featured in a local newspaper!
Do you ride a bike regularly? Do you live in NYC or have you done the Warriors ride?
I love it! Out of this world post! I do not ride a bike regularly, but it is awesome and fun. I would love to ride a bike in NYC one day and I have never done a Warriors ride. Maybe one day!
