Why I Prefer Hybrid Bikes For My Daily Commute
There are a lot of people using bikes for their daily commute, otherwise known as “bike-to-work”. I am one of them. I have tried using a mountain bike, a road bike and a hybrid bike. For me among the three, the lightest and most enjoyable is the road bike. Every pedal is effortless and it gives you the speed that you want whenever you need it. Unfortunately for me it is also the most problematic in terms of flats.
Of course you can buy top of the line rims and tires to avoid pinch flats, etc. But for me it is not practical because the I am only using that bike to get me to and from work. A good set would cost me an arm and a leg, or another bike.
What I love about mountain bikes is the suspension and stability. No issues with large potholes, rough roads and slippery slopes. But my issue with it is the weight and mud spatters. I end up having dirty work clothes, and mud does not easily come off, which is bad news for me and my favorite outfits. For the weight I can buy carbon frames, but again it will not be practical.
Then there is the hybrid which is a cross between a road bike and a mountain bike. With hybrids you can save a lot of weight because the frame and the fork has no shocks. Another weight saver for old hybrids is they use v-brakes instead of disks, which is a lot lighter.
The diameter of wheels are the same as road bikes therefore you can also get the speed and ease that you need, almost the same as road bikes but still faster than mountain bikes. You can place road bike tires for speed or something a lot thicker for stability without putting too much road friction.
Lastly, compared to road bikes, rider posture is also a lot better for hybrids. You are in a relaxed state while riding or pedaling.
So if you are in the market for a bike, try to consider a Hybrid Bike.
