My first "touch with cryptos" was Minergate on my Laptop, when I was mining Monero and other altcoins. For the first impression, and to familiarise yourself I think it is a good way.
Of course. I am STILL doing it on my old gaming laptop, lol, not with Minergate, though. (xmr-stak on mobile i7 and two 650M.... ROFL)
It' just that for people who want some 'free' Satoshi without risking their hardware there are easier, less risky, and higher paying alternatives - like the one I pointed out in the article.
