Why Did Bitcoin Cash Lose the Bitcoin Twitter Account?

in #bitcoin7 years ago (edited)

Today a big win 🏆 occurred in the $crypto twitter sphere: Twitter finally suspended the @Bitcoin twitter account. As many of you know @Bitcoin was not run by Satoshi Nakamoto or anyone having anything to do with the real Bitcoin. Instead it was owned by Bitcoin Cash and and was used for Brandjacking Bitcoin.

That was until today when the account was suspended.

Why did Twitter finally take action against @Bitcoin?

Was it because they were pretending to be Bitcoin? No not at all...

To get a better understanding of what happened lets look at the events as they occured

1. Twitter suspends the @Bitcoin twitter account

2. A new user takes over the account and sends out 3 tweets irrelevant tweets.

3. This doesn't last long before a 3rd account appears (the current owner)

So what really happened with the Bitcoin Twitter account?

We know many people have been reporting the Bitcoin twitter for impersonating someone who they are not. Funny, but given the fact that Bitcoin is decentralized, and there is no rightful owner; this wouldn't exactly make sense. Especially considering this account has been active for quite some time now. Instead they must have found other evidence...

Why did Bitcoin Cash lose ownership of the Bitcoin Twitter?

Because purchasing a twitter account is in direct violation of the twitter rules:

In their rules Twitter clearly states that "attempts to sell Twitter accounts" or "extort other forms of payment" with Twitter accounts will automatically result in an account suspension. Which is what happened at first: the Bitcoin twitter account was suspended. And for a moment it was recovered by another person... Most likely a mistake or a bug as you're unable to register an account that's been suspended. I confirmed this myself by trying to register another known suspended account.

But then something interesting happened...

@Bitcoin was restored to an account created in 2013. Most likely the one that the Bitcoin Cash team purchased the domain off of. Now it's unknown whether the current owner with the now private @Bitcoin account was the person who originally sold it to Roger Ver. I'm assuming it was Roger who made the deal because was complaining on twitter about "free speech" after the account was taken from them. Not surprising he's blaming someone else...

In the past Roger has publicly prided himself on being a good marketer and talked about how developers overlook the importance of marketing. So it's pretty safe to assume he was the one who acquired this account in the first place. Let's hope he didn't get it for cheap!
