Thousand (and three hundred) cryptocurrencies, and how much more?

The 280 cooperative applications are found in a large and growing number of distinct domains such as resource sharing, games, social networks, and so on. and with several competing offers in each area. Some will disappear, others will be born. Their number will undoubtedly continue to grow, and with it the number of associated cyber coins. The same is probably true for the 210 systems that offer specialized financial functions. As with all other goods, their future will depend mainly on the judgment of their potential users. It is the developers of applications that will make their choice between the 370 platforms, specialized or generalist. Their dynamics should therefore resemble that of operating systems or programming languages. The logic would be that only a few survive. There are more than 150 offers, including a dozen operating systems and a dozen languages account for 90% of actual use. The current proliferation of projects is likely due to the novelty of the field, where the technologies are not stabilized and where the nascent supremacy of Ethereum can still be questioned. It is likely that some platforms will not find enough users to justify their maintenance, and that their potential benefits will be taken up by survivors, a development favored by free software practices. In total, it is likely that the use will focus on a dozen cooperative systems, while leaving a hundred or so marginal systems more or less innovative. Before examining the last category, that of general payment systems, which are only subject to strictly monetary competition, it can already be foreseen that the number of application-type systems or platforms with an own account unit will continue to to count in hundreds.
