architects and a tornado

in #bitcoin7 years ago (edited)

Suppose you're an architect. You know every conceivable detail about how a building is made. You're an expert in this area.

Someone comes by and tells you the building is about to fall.

Ha, how does he know. Psshh. You're the architect. Impossible that he would have a better sense of it than you. You know all the ins and outs and the geometry and etc.

But this other person might understand some critical outside factor better than you. If a large tornado is about to blow through the neighborhood, then it didn't really matter how much you knew about architecture. What's most important is that you know about the tornado. And then from there it's just a matter of common sense that it might knock the building over.

It's interesting to see financial types try to make sense of Bitcoin/cryptos.

Bitcoin happens to have a financial aspect to it (there's some carryover, sure), and it's tempting to try to understand things by relating them to what's most familiar to you, but fundamentally a blockchain is just a way to express information back and forth without central control or oversight, and isn't really similar at all to other financial things.

What's most important is just understanding what Bitcoin/crypto is and what impact it can have on humanity. It's not that meaningful whether someone is a financial pro or not.

Financial expertise could even mislead you, if you use it to assume that this is gonna behave like other things you're familiar with.

Perfectly said Full. I have everyone from my parents, fiends, and every news outlet ever telling me how bitcoin’s bubble popped today!

I shrugged them off and told them to still hold, this happens all the time. I just hope they listen smh

ya for real .. it's nuts how it can go wild upward spike then when it comes back down people want to act shocked about it like it's a big deal

So many new people are in the space that they will believe everything the media says which sucks, but I'll buy up some cheap coins any day!

hehe yup! I feel like it could drop for a while now .. hopefully it isn't a multi-year downturn like in the past .. but if so, oh well, more time to get some more

I’m low key hoping it’s for a few months so I can save up some money to accumulate haha!

Have a happy holiday Full!

happy holidays to you too!!!

It is true that this is unlike any other investment. There is no company behind it, there are not profits being taken, there are not dividends being paid, it is an investment in the value of the technology. It's unlike anything that has come before it, and speculating what that is "worth" in dollars is very difficult.

Financial expertise could even mislead you, if you use it to assume that this is gonna behave like other things you're familiar with.

That is a great point.

I read an article the other day from the Harvard Business Review. They proposed that bitcoin and the blockchain are not disruptive technologies, they are foundational ones.

The point being, that professionals probably don’t see what is coming (your tornado analogy) and there is an entirely new economy building alongside the one they understand - and blowing theirs away in efficiency in the process.

There come a few tornados, and one of them is the blockchain. ;-)
