Think and Grow Rich Chapter 1 Review

Intro:

Napoleon Hill started out as a journalist. Andrew Carnegie tasked him to study the most successful 500 men in America in the early 1900s. Men such as Henry Ford, Charles Schwab, John D. Rockefeller, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, William H. Taft, Wilbur Wright, and many more.

The book emphasizes the power of desire & faith and how a simple though, driven by extreme desire, can manifest your wildest dreams.

Chapter 1: The Power of Thought

Mr. Barnes had a burning desire to go into business with Thomas Edison. He had no way to get to New Jersey, and he did not know Edison. But he did have a BURNING DESIRE.

He hitchhiked to NJ by freight train. He arrived at Edisons’s laboratory and announced it was his desire to go into business with Edison. Years later, Edison said he would’ve never accepted Barnes for a job if it wasn’t for the BURNING DESIRE that he could see in his eyes.

When one desires something so deeply that they’re willing to risk their entire future on the turning of a single event, they are usually bound to get what they want.

It wasn’t Barnes appearance that got him the job, it was his DETERMINATION.
When he had the opportunity to work with Edison, HE SEIZED IT!!!

3 Feet from Gold -

R.U. Darby, who later became one of the most successful insurance salesmen in America, did everything he could to go out west and start mining for gold.

Then he quit mining before he consulted with an expert!

He sold all of his mining equipment to a junk salesman for a fraction of the cost it was worth.

The junkman consulted a mining engineer, and discovered that Darby had stopped mining gold 3 FEET from the large gold vein.

Darby learned his lesson and vowed to never take “NO” for an answer selling life insurance.

500 men told the author that their greatest success came one step beyond their greatest defeat.

Robert Kiyosaki lived in his car for 2 years determined to gain financial freedom! 2 years later he has so much money that he never needed to work again.

The $0.50 Lesson in Persistence

Sometimes “NO” does not really mean “NO”

Ford and the V8 engine -

Ford insisted that his engineers create a V8 engine cast in one block. They insisted that it was impossible. After 6 months his engineers came back unsuccessful, Ford still insisted that they persist. He had to fire several engineers and change employees. 6 months later they still could not build the engine, yet again Ford told them to go back to the drawing board and try again.

6 months later, the engineers were successful, and Ford became one of the most successful men in history.

The story of Steven Spielberg -

Steven Spielberg would sneak into Paramount studios everyday on the tour bus. He would take the tour and then sneak off into one of the studios and wait until the tour was over. He would wear a suit and take briefcase with him and pretend that he was a producer. He would talk to actors and writers and meet them as if he was already a producer. Eventually, he snuck into an abandoned office and made it into his own office. He gave one of his screenplays to a big director and got his big break

Today Steven Spielberg is one of the biggest directors in the world.
