John McAfee’s Thoughts on Privacy and Hacking

in #bitcoin7 years ago (edited)

Hello again DTubers and Steemians I have a Special video and Post for you today. I was thinking of just making a video talking about Best Internet Practices Online. But I saw a video today with Patrick Bet- David Interviewing John McAfee, which inspired me to change it up and add the good points that John, and David had on Hacking, and the method Hackers use today to get to your personal information and of course Crypto!

Your Privacy Online

That’s right! Facebook is a free Platform for anyone to use, we have to be diligent and extra careful with what you share on Facebook and All Social Media Platforms. John had a good point to remember that whatever you share online, you have to expect it to be viewed publicly by ANYONE. And about the Cell Phones with Privacy. When you sign up on any Social Media Platform it will ask you if you want the APP to use your location, camera, and microphone. You are in control of what you allow your mobile to access. These options are used to improve your online and offline shopping experience. You have to realize - that when you physically check-in to places, people will know where you are currently located, and can easily use this information in a bad way. Companies record and share your buying habits when you shop online. They use this information to sell you things that might interest you. This may sound great! But do you really want everyone to know that you love eating at McDonald's 10 times a day? It might sound innocent to you but it’s actually kind of scary to have a profile on your everyday habits.

So in participating in all forms of Social Media you are swapping your Privacy with a Company to sell your information for a profit to others for a convenience. And because your information is placed online and in the hands of these companies it is of course accessible by Hackers, which exposes you to security threats, and the potential to identity theft, and possibly financial harm.

How did John Mcafee Contribute to the early days of the Internet and Security?

I also want to go over a little of how John McAfee started. Like many of us, as a child he mostly stayed to himself and pretty much was a straight A Student. A fellow Nerd of course, but there was something in the interview that caught my attention. It was about how the whole McAfee Anti-virus started. So John saw an opportunity and a need for an Anti-virus to create something to help people protect themselves online. He said that he created the software to help people, but didn’t expect it to become so success like it did. Isn’t that weird, how we can do something small and it can flourish into something huge? Something that not too many people know about John is that he was a major contributor to the Internet. He was the one who created the Bulletin Board System that was used in the beginning. And within Weeks almost everyone was using it. I think his success was made from the fact that he was the only one who created such a program. Was he lucky? Nah, I think he’s extremely smart! He saw an opportunity, and had the skills to create it, and just took it! On! Man that’s amazing! So, this teaches us to position yourself with the skills to create something BIG when the opportunity shows itself! See, McAfee is teaching us so much in just one interview! Man that’s awesome! I don’t about you, but I’m going to look into that Cloak phone of his for educational purposes.

Ok, now let's get back to the meat and potatoes of this post. So, in this last part John McAfee talks about the election and the method that Hackers use to cover their tracks, or initiate a Smear Campaign on an enemy. Once again this is something we all can somewhat protect ourselves from by something called disinformation. Since the internet only has what you put out there, it’s best to avoid any real information that could put your security and safety in jeopardy. Of course if you do not care if people have this information, then all to your own. But, It’s always good to be a little Paranoid to protect yourself from being an easy target.

What are some ways you can make it harder for Hackers?

John McAfee mentioned that he practices dis-information by saying on his Twitter posts of his house that it’s a house somewhere in South America. This isn’t true because he claims that he doesn’t own a house there, but this way, no one really knows where he is in the world. I think if you want to share your location to the public. You should use a more general approach, for an example if you are in the United States you can just say your location is in the US and not your exact location like California, and most definitely not let’s say San Francisco, California. Of course this would only work so far, cause most Hackers who REALLY want your information will use a more personal approach like Social Hacking. This is a Hacking Technique commonly used in today's Hacking attempts. Like mentioned earlier in McAfee’s interview. Hackers now use people to get the information they need. If you have ever gotten a phone call at work from someone saying that they are from so, and so but you had no idea who they were, and gave them a number or just transferred them, you could have just let a Social Hacker in. Though it may seem innocent. That little bit of information or transfer of call is essential to get what they want. That’s why Social Hacking is VERY hard to deter. Unless you give absolutely no information over the phone. This type of exploitation will always be very effective.

What are somethings you can do to avoid the data leak? Simply knowing who you are speaking with. If the person is someone you don’t know personally, don’t give them any information. Unfortunately, almost all Banks, Credit Companies, and most Businesses use easy to get information to verify accounts. The kind of stuff a Hacker could simply get by searching the Social Media of most people online. You would be surprised of the type of information these Hackers get from people’s emails. You know what I mean. You probably save all your information in your email or a cloud hosting account. Which is why it’s almost impossible to completely protect yourself from these Hacking attempts. But that doesn’t mean you can’t make them work for it. Unless you plan to completely wipe yourself off the internet, you should work on Best Internet Practices.

Let’s summarize what I talked about in this video:

  1. Social Media, you need to realize that whatever you put on the Internet will be seen by the public and can be used against you.

  2. John McAfee teaches us that it’s important to position yourself with the skills needed to present opportunities. It doesn’t matter what it is you love and enjoy to do. Learn the things you need to be an expert in your field, and take opportunities as they come up.

  3. There are many Hacking Methods on and off the Internet that can be used to harm us. Make sure to make it hard and not label yourself as easy prey by voluntarily putting your private information on Social Media Sites and on the Web. If you don’t know who they are when they call. Avoid giving them any information. You have to watch-out for the real scam artist who will look you in the face and lie to you. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

  4. Last but not least. Never store ANY private information in your email, or on a Cloud Hosting Service. Remember, if it’s connected to the internet, it’s accessible to anyone!
