August 1st Aftermath: The sad reality for most of us

"Should I hold or should I sell?"

Shelly looked at me as if I could somehow read the future.

"Umm, I don't know. I was reading online that--"

"Wait, what about that twenty-seven cent stock you were talking about?" She blurted, cutting me off mid sentence.
"What stock?" I quizzed? "We are talking about cryptocurrency. "

Shelly bit her lip and looked away from me; defeated. She was totally confused and so was I.

Okay, the bit of dialog above never happened, but it could have. The truth is that many of us began this journey after reading some amazing tale online or hearing from a friend who was doing IT, but could not explain exactly what IT is.

We hurried out and bought our gaming geared graphics cards with visions of millions tucking us to bed that night.
In the morning we awake to a very depressing reality. Bitcoin is out of reach. Ethereum has gone away. Monero is only for those with several large mining rigs.

Your only recourse is to buy into that coin you kind of trust or maybe, just maybe write something so profoundly touching on Steemit that hundreds of affluent steemians gift you mana from Steem heaven.

Even then the deck is stacked against you. The coins you can afford are far from sure things. The true believers yell the virtues of their coins while demonizing the scamming nature of others.

Steemit, while a shining light in a sea of cryptocurrency darkness, has been overrun with hundreds of eager writers, each hoping that today, this magical day, their fortunes will change and the mere seconds their content is at the top of the heap, the right someone will pluck them from obscurity and shove them into the limelight.

The sad reality is that while some will find success, most will become disenfranchised; discouraged. They will sell their rigs for pennies on the dollar, forget about their steemit accounts and move back to the poppy fields of their former master: FACEBOOK.
