A Review - Cryptocurrency Terms
Some review of what I'm learning:
Cryptocurrency: A digital internet based currency that is encrypted for security purposes. Thus the term 'crypto' from
cryptography.
Coins: The common term for digital currencies, includes altcoin, and tokens.
Bitcoin: One of the first, if not the first cryptocurrency to be successful. There were attempts at a digital currency prior to
Bitcoin, but they did not survive.
Altcoin: Is all other coins other then Bitcoin. They come in two formats, 'native' and 'bitcoin-forked' -see the next two lines:
-Bitcoin Forked Blockchains: Altcoins that 'fork' off, or is derived from the bitcoin blockchain.
-Native Blockchain: Altcoins that have their own 'native' blockchain. These are not 'forked' off the bitcoin blockchain.
Tokens: Their main function is to serve a purpose other than to be a currency. Tokens still have a value though. An
example is the Basic Attention Token used by the Brave.com internet browser, called BAT. Apparently there are
several types of tokens: Security tokens, Equity tokens, Utility tokens, and Payment tokens.
Anyway, all clear as mud -I'll continue my pursuit of digital currencies and then review the different token types in another post.
Good luck to all who venture this way, and if you have a thought on this subject or any subject, go ahead, leave a comment.
