Topia Coming To Bitshares: Could Our Data Finally Be Ours????
I must start by saying this post is neither supporting nor condemning Topia's ICO. Personally, I do not have the knowledge nor the financial expertise to make any recommendations. I bring this up for informational purposes only.
@stan announced last night in a post that Topia is joining the Bitshares blockchain. They are launching an ICO towards the end of the month. This is a very exciting project that I feel many should know about.

Topia is a company that specializes in data security. Historically, it has worked with the US Military and DoD securing their transmissions. Now they are turning their sights on the private sector.
One of the biggest issues we have with the Googles and Facebooks of the world is they know everything about us. We are rapidly moving into the surveillance space. It is bad enough we have governments doing what they are doing but now we are being monitored as much, if not more, by private companies.
This situation is deemed only to get worse with the introduction of personal assistants such as Alexa. We are also moving towards the I.O.T. (Internet of Things) which means all our devices will be connected to the Internet. Granted this is something that could be of great convenience to people, it also opens the door for exploitation. When your refrigerator does your ordering for you, someone knows exactly what you are eating. As we found out from the likes of Facebook, that information will be sold.
Topia aims to stop this. They are going to develop decentralized peer-to-peer infrastructure which enables each person to send encrypted transaction without the use of a central authority. Today, we send information via email, messengers, text, and programs such as slack which go through a central authority. In other words, someone has that information.
What is really exciting is this data layer is going on the Bitshares blockchain. This is going to bring a ton of activity over the next few years. Can you imagine the implication in the legal and medical environments? These industries deal with a lot of personal information which could use another layer of security. Plus, without a central authority, the ability to hack goes away.
Who needs cryptokitties when your blockchain is sending encrypted information that people do not want hacked around the world?
Blockchain technology and the developments on it are rapidly changing the world. We are really in the infantile stages. This is why I continually write about being patient with STEEM. There is a lot more development coming that will alter things are great deal on this blockchain. Also, pricing action is reflective of nothing other than what the buyers and sellers at the moment think. This could be reflective of what is going on yet most times it is not.
Long term holders need to ignore pricing action and focus upon what is happening on that blockchain. That is what will determine what is standing in 2-3 years.

it's a good news but also unbelievable why would a company closely connected with government be interested in decentralization..
Stan definitely has big connections in the defense industry; he worked in it for decades and it looks like it's paying off due to his networking.

Now this makes this project a suparb one as they aim at helping us stop the prying eyes if the government and private companies like Facebook and Google like you rightly said, but on the flip side, don't you think crime will be on the increase and the ability to fight crime by the force will be crippled. Most times when there is a homicide for instance , the police would go look up the persons details , call records and internet records. Imagine those records are all encrypted. How do they find the culprit.
I wouldn't know the solution to profer for this but u think we should always look at issues like this In two directions and not conclude just looking in one direction.
I don't think it is excactly like that. Don't they like search for more public stuff. Do they actually have instant acces there into private, without any bureucracy even from inside? Hard for me to believe that it takes 10 minutes to go trough all data just like that. And I doubt that there are too many people getting out just like that because some officials can't read their "tweets". Here in finland it seems to so that in 80% of those homicide cases, police has already known who the person is. So I think they are just over excaggerating things. In other hands, in USA there is propably more crime that is "build in system", which make the wrong doers possibly just be some average-joes who were born to poor America.
Isnt that what they want you to believe? How often is someone a victim of a crime versus how often we are spied upon?
And arent the "crimes" committed against those done by large corporations who know every detail of our lives. I will take my chances with the few homicidal maniacs out there and less police/government intrusion along with corporate following.
How often do the police access your phone? How often is Google, Facebook, and the cell phone carrier in there?
People are I when it comes to how much information is on the internet. I used to use Facebook to locate the owners of lost passports, when they fell out of envelopes or if tossed in a blue mailbox. I used to use appraisal districts to find current addresses for home owners. I returned a $1000 cash that was in a post truck fire. It took 6 months for all that mail to dry out, so we could handle it. Good people use the internet for good things, bad people use it to steal from you. The bad thing is, we still have to remind people not to click on unknown links. Crazy. Good info Task. 😎
I've never hear of Topia until now. I seems like a pretty cool project, and it will defiantly be beneficial to those who need to give away a lot of personal information. The thing I'm worried about is, if this is done wrong, there may end up being a central type authority, which would be the devs, who can have the ability to look at all the encrypted data.
You're right that it's something that could take years to realize it's pricing potential, but it's definitely something that has value. People are getting more concerned with privacy (or less concerned with privacy, but that's a different subset of the population) and they don't want their data tracked by a company that is selling the data to make a profit. Hearing stories about people having ads suggested to them based on topics that were only discussed in a personal conversation when the phone wasn't even in use is scary. And that's not including all the apps that actively data-mine while you use them. It's getting out of hand. That's one of the reasons broswers like Brave are going to continue to get more popular. They block the cookies and trackers. I'm curious to see the effects of Topia on the whole landscape.
I get a very bad feeling about all this.
I know there a lot of well intentioned people out there.
But they are not usually the people pulling the strings.
Blockchain technology has evolved, in the next few years to come. When someone is not on the blockchain, the person would be considered out of time. Thank you for letting me know about the manna coins, I'll look at it.
