What is a DAO? What is DAOstack?

Before diving into DAOstack, you need to make sure you have a good enough understanding of what a DAO is. DAO stands for Decentralized Autonomous Organization. A DAO is an "open, self-organized network coordinated by crypto-economic incentives and self-executing code, while cooperating around shared goals". Now that we know what a DAO, what exactly is DAOstack?

DAOstack is essentially an operating platform for DAOs where they can be built, and developers can collaborate to create DApps. By using the DAOstack platform for collaboration, it gives individuals the ownership they deserve, allowing organizations to function autonomously.

The Team

Lets take a closer look at three of DAOstack's team members: Matan Field, Josh Zemel, & Dor Garbash

Matan Field

Mr. Field is the current CEO and architect of DAOstack, and he definitely is the definition of an entrepreneur! DAOstack is the 3rd organization he has helped to found. Prior to founding DAOstack, he worked as the CEO and was co-founder of Backfeed. In addition to co-founding Backfeed, he was also a part of the founding team at La'Zooz. La'Zooz was a platform built for Decentralized Autonomous Corporations. Having this past experience, and learning what he did right/wrong will definitely be a huge benefit to him and the team as they embark on their project.

Josh Zemel

Mr. Zemel is the Director of Communications at DAOstack. He definitely has plenty of experience in this field as he has been in consulting and marketing for over a decade. One great aspect that is worthy of pointing out about him is that he has founded 4, yes four, profitable companies. I think the biggest issue that he might encounter going forward (being that DAOstack is primarily a US based organization, with a handful of employees located in Israel) will be marketing in Asia. I think that the country in Asia that could benefit from this the most would probably be China and North Korea. In China, they actually just created a social reputation score, which will give the rich more power and the poor even less authority than they already had. However, it is a HUGE benefit being located in the states though as there is a plethora of blockchain evangelists here!

Dor Garbash

Other than being the Alchemy Product Lead for DAOstack, Mr. Garbash brings a unique addition to the DAOstack team. He has an interesting history with not only work, but as well as his education. He studied at Université Paris Descartes (Paris, France), as well as studying in Israel for a few years while working on some projects. Other than being successful at leading various tech projects, he gives DAOstack a direct connection to both Israel and France!

The Platform

DAOstack is built into different layers to create a platform that allows users to create DApps and deploy them for seamless collaboration. This is what the different stacks look like:

The 5 stacks that compose the DAOstack platform are : DAOs, Alchemy, Arc.js, The ArcHives, & Arc

DAO

The stack "DAO" is basically the top layer, and is comprised of all smart companies, which operate on the DAOstack platform. As explained before in the article, a DAO is an "open, self-organized network coordinated by crypto-economic incentives and self-executing code, while cooperating around shared goals". By using a DAO is essentially eliminates the middleman as well as eliminates the possibility of centralized funding mechanisms! One of the big problems for DAOs in the past is they have always had scalability issues, which is one of the big reasons why they haven't been widely implemented. DAOstack enables organizations to have a scalable solution!

There are two ways you can implement the DAO for equal voting ability. The first shows how everyone has the same amount of votes- needing 5 individuals to have the outcome decided. The second (on the right) only requires 4 individuals to have majority. This is their scalable solution to voting. By using fractalization, the company is able to have a governance with a massive amount of people giving their opinion on the matter at hand.

Alchemy

The second layer of the DAOstack is Alchemy. This is the layer where individuals are able to create and collaborate on DApps by using DAOstack's platform. Alchemy is the front-end that is currently in its Alpha stage. Considering I am no pro at reading code, I will refer you to read through this article, which is a 3rd party organization that reviewed DAOstack's code: https://medium.com/@cryptolaboratory/github-review-daostack-ea500a7367f8. They go through the MVP of Alchemy, and they give their thoughts and opinions on it!

Arc. js

This is probably my favorite part of all of the stacks, as I have zero understanding of Solidity and blockchain code language (even though it is on my list of things to do)! It is a platform that allows front-end developers (like me!) to easily build DApps on top of the Arc stack.

Arc.Hives

Basically a pun on the word archives (love what they named this one!!), this is the stack where all the curation records are stored. The interesting aspect is that all these curated records are stored and shared. On this stack, you will be able to find an app store that will be completely free to use- all the apps created by the founding team. This stack drastically increases the interoperability of the different DApps because of the network effect.

Arc

Arc is the backend of the DAOstack platform, and it essentially works similar to Wordpress, except that it functions for DAOs.

This whole platform is built on Solidity code, so most of the people who will be using this part of DAOstack's platform will be programmers. The stack is a library of smart contracts which can all be modified to their own to be used as governance for various DAOs.

Roadmap

Screen Shot 2018-05-24 at 6.46.42 PM.png

After completing their main sale earlier this month, which sold out in just 65 seconds (you read that right), the team is currently focusing on the public beta release of Genesis and Alchemy. You can actually watch a video of it here:

I think that going forward the release of the Genesis DAO will be pretty big, and thats expected to be released in the spring of this year. The Genesis DAO will enable Alchemy to manage a fund immediately, which is pretty remarkable.

One of the big announcements that they have had recently, is a partnership with Talao to turn them into Talao DAO! This partnership is definitely going to be the first of many. You can find more details about this partnership here: https://medium.com/daostack/daostack-and-talao-join-forces-to-accelerate-the-emergence-of-a-worldwide-freelancing-dao-ae1415115753

The Token

The DAOstack ecosystem is built around their ERC-20 token, GEN, which runs on the Ethereum blockchain network. Right now, there is currently a circulating supply of 33,378,282 GEN, with a total supply of 60,000,000 GEN.

The token has a few different functionalities on their platform. It can be used as a PoS (Proof-of Stake) token, as well as a transferable form of wealth. The actual token, GEN, serves as a way of grabbing attention by bringing up proposals, or going against proposals. The token isn't actually used for voting, and has no impact on voting power- making everyone's vote equal no matter how much GEN you own. You are able to stake your GEN tokens to create proposals for organizations. If the proposal goes through and is approved you are then rewarded with more GEN tokens! The same can go with staking against a proposal. If you disagree with a proposal, you stake against it, and if it doesn't get approved, you are rewarded with GEN tokens.
