INTRODUCTION

Marketing has been and still remains a vital part of any company that has product and services offerings and eventually want to succeed and make a profit. It is so important that most firms and establishment have a separate arm/department to create and carry out its advertising/marketing campaigns. More than seven in ten global respondents (72%) agreed that all other factors being equal, they would buy from a retailer with a loyalty program over one without.

The problem however with these approaches so far, is that they haven’t really been effective both to the companies and the customers. Neither parties get full value from these marketing and loyalty programs mainly because of the system used and the platforms on which these loyalty and marketing programs are conducted. It has been estimated that the about $1 trillion has been spent worldwide on marketing and to be honest I don’t think these companies get to have the value they deserve from these campaigns.

The traditional marketing system has grown inefficient. Even with the online ads campaigns, marketers still fail to get a 60% conversion for ongoing ads. While loyalty programs seem to be a promising tool for increasing sales, existing point-based loyalty programs do not work as well as they should. According to Bond Loyalty’s Report 2017, more than half of point-based loyalty program participants (57%) don’t know their points balance and more than one in three of them (38%) are unaware of the value of their points, let alone how to use them. It is estimated that about $100 billion worth of loyalty points are left unused in North America alone. Single merchant membership reward systems are less effective and valued by consumers and hence not an effective tool for the intended purpose of the marketing program. Hence, the search for a more effective earn-and-redeem loyalty program has been a challenge and subject of extensive studies in the retail industry for years.
