The Ethereum blockchain has now become larger than Bitcoin’s with over 180 gigabytes by April 2017. Blockchain experts are warning such further increases may destroy Ethereum altogether. After a single user reported that there was a huge backlog of transactions while he was trying to sync a node.

Blockchain commentator and entrepreneur Tuur Demeester tweeted saying:

According to one source, the Ethereum blockchain has bloated by +700% in the past 12 months: now about 180 GB.

Further comments focused on the so called problem of 'Blockchain Bloat' which would be compounded by the the relatively free to use wallets which many users had been using. With the rising range of altcoins on the Ethereum blockchain, the load has been putting nodes under a humongous pressure. With the rising popularity of digital currencies and blockchains, the influx of more such platforms would create a massive obstacle for Ethereum to overcome. The upward trajectory could see Ethereum be the first blockchain to cross the 1TB block size before 2018.

It looks like Etherum may encounter it's own scaling problems at some point. However for enterprise-class systems 1Tb should remain manageable. Long term this could cause an issue though.

Its expected to reach 1TB by end of this year alone. And crypto has quite reached mass adoption stage yet. At this rate, Ethereum will crash and die by the looks of it

Do you have any Idea on how ethereum plans to resolve this? It will become quite hard to run a full node no?

Ethereum hasn't issued any public notice so far, I believe. But running nodes will become quite impossible at this rate by 2020. (Even for large businesses)
