Summary

There were some concerns from the community asking why SOUL tokens are needed in the mailing dApp and why the dApp can’t stay on the NEO blockchain. We want to make clear that the Phantasma Protocol project is not a dApp, but a blockchain.

In this article we want to highlight the Phantasma Blockchain, Phantasma Mail dApp, the SDK and the Phantom Force.

We built the dApp to show the potential of our ideas and also to show that our team can develop and release things in time. SOUL tokens are the fuel that powers the Phantasma Blockchain. At the moment de mailing dApp is on the NEO blockchain, which is why SOUL tokens are not needed yet. Once the Phantasma Mail is running entirely on the Phantasma Blockchain, each email will require a minimal amount of SOUL as fees while benefiting from the total security and encryption that the Phantasma Blockchain provides. These fees can be compensated by the token redistribution mechanism.

Why not on NEO?

Because our project is not a dApp, it is a blockchain.

• Scalability: Although the NEO blockchain allows dApps to run on it, it does not provide the scalability we need to run a fully decentralized content distribution platform, such as message delivery, nor does it support all features yet that we will need such as massive data storage.
• Compatibility: Phantasma will be able to communicate with the NEO network through the NEOX protocol. Support for cross-chain interoperability with other chains will be possible in the future.
• Features: By branching off onto our own Blockchain, we will be able to keep adding new and innovative features that we believe will improve the content distribution platform. If we were running on the NEO blockchain, we would not be able to run these features without straining the NEO network.
• Monetization: With the Phantasma Blockchain and its dApps, content creators will be able to monetize their content however they want to, through free-access, pay once or subscription models on the dApps.
• Storage nodes: Each user of the Phantasma dApps will be able to turn their devices into a node in the Phantasma Storage by providing a small part of their device’s storage to the network, and in turn receive SOUL tokens. More information in the future.

Open Source

The Phantasma Protocol will be an open source platform where developers can build different types of dApps. Creating new ways of using smart contracts to store, share and access data is all possible with the Phantasma blockchain. We have full confidence that our community will come up with crazy and innovative new ways of implementing different functions and features within their apps built on the Phantasma platform!

SDK

The software development kit (SDK) is set to release in Q3 and then people can start tinkering with the features and components available by Phantasma Protocol.

Phantom Force

Once we release the SDK, our Phantom Force will also be live! The Phantom Force will be our growing global network of developers. It can run independently from the Phantasma Team. Developers can contribute to the project by helping to improve the protocol and add new features that will allow for everybody to create new types of dApps. We understand that it is easier for a revolutionary product to be developed by a global network of developers, rather than a team of people creating products.

Phantasma dApp

It’s a Demo, not a Test Net

We built the dApp to show the potential of our ideas and also to show that our team can develop and release things in time. This dApp functions as an example of what you can build on the Phantasma Protocol. The team will be continuously building and adding new features that we want developers to learn about!

Why would I need SOUL tokens to use the dApp?

The real use of the token will be later, once the actual chain and storage tech is fully up and running. Once the Phantasma Mail is running entirely on the Phantasma Blockchain, each email will require a minimal amount of SOUL as fees while benefiting from the total security and encryption that the Phantasma Blockchain provides. These fees will be require a minimal fraction of SOUL tokens and can be compensated by the token redistribution mechanism. Each user will be able to provide a small part of their device’s storage and continuously earn SOUL tokens that will allow them to use the dApps for free.
