SPAIN 1 - 1 RUSSIA

PENALTY KICKS:

SPAIN (3) - (4) RUSSIA

English

David fought Goliat and won. Russia keeps surprising everyone in this world cup, the magic of being the host and having a full stadium cheering for them has had a considerable weight and the Russians have taken advantage of that condition and eliminated the broken but still powerful Spain. Playing with a central forward or without it, Spain was never friends with the Goal and couldn´t score much on this world cup, as for their defense, Spain was low tier and for moments they embarrased themselves. This is definitely due to the rushed head coach change a few days before the world cup started.

On the other hand, Russia started the world cup knowing their aspirations and strategy, how to play and what to avoid, a lesson they learned when they tried to play at the same level as Uruguay instead of playing their strengths and trying to exploit the big team weaknesses. We said it in that game´s analysis, it was great for Russia to lose against Uruguay ecause they learned a lot from that loss: To focus on deffense, to not attack relentlessly and being careless and to wait to counterstrike with their fast players..

And they did exactly that against Spain. The spaniards scored at minute 11 through a Russian own goal from Serguei Ignashevich who, instead of looking at the ball, kept following Ramos and never saw the ball coming directly to him, a bad luck rebound and Spain was ahead in the score board. This started to look like a blow out and it seemed Spain would have a goal party, but Russia didn´t loose their mind and remained clam and with the same strategy as before the goal. The Russians knew they had a full stadium´s support and didn´t give up, they held on the Spanish attacks all the game and their patience paid off: At minute 41 Artiom Dziuba tied the score via Penalty kick. After the tie, the Russians crammed up in their own box knowing they would need to secure the tie and try to go to extra time, where anything can happen and one goal usually decides everything, or perhaps the penalty kicks, where luck plays a big role.

The feat was achieved and in the penalty kicks Koke and Iago Aspas missed for the Spanis and Russia, who knew how to play this game and didn´t hesitate or doubted at the moment of kicking the penalties, advanced to the quarter finals.

We´ll see how far the host´s luck can take Russia because they have in front one of the toughest matches they´ve ever faced, Croatia. For Spain, they´ll have a long return home to think about their mistakes and the inevitable generation jump they desperately need but refuse to accept.

CROATIA 1 - 1 DENMARK

PENALTY KICKS:

CROATIA (3) - (2) DENMARK

English

Mathias Jorgensen scored the fastest goal so far on this world cup with a shot that got deflected and with some bad luck for the Croatians, entered their goal; a goal called locker room score because it destroys every strategy from the losing team, because they start the game already behind, especially for Croatia, that we are sure never expected to be behind so early in the match - or maybe they just didn´t expected to be behind at all. But Croatia has proven to have a strong mind and wuickly reacted. After a series of rebounds in the Danish box, Mario Madzukic tied the game with a broken shot that Schmeichel couldn´t stop.

The rest of the game was very competed in the middle field with a slight dominance by Croatia that was overwhelmed by a lot of fouls by the Danish team that only got one yellow card in the whole game, situation that would´ve been very different if the referee followed the rule book and painted in yellow more than one player.

Almost at the end the middfielder Luka Modric missed a penalty kick that would have given the win to Croatia.

The game went to overtime and eventually to penalty kicks, where the Croatians with a cold mind outscored the out of foucs Danish team. Croatia will face the host team Russia in a game where they will have to come up with a strategy to be contundent and score more than what they did on this match, they gamestyle keeps being dominant but they lack goals.

Denamrk says good bye after showing a good performance, they lacked the level to advance but the fans are happy with this result. We still need to see Denmark perform in the final stages in the next world cup.

Adios Eriksen
