Recyling

A friend of mine was travelling in Munich at the weekend. He was amazed at how many recycling centres we have in the city where you can recycle plastic, metal and glass, separated by colour. He wasn't used to the fact that there was one on almost every other corner.
I told him that this is quite normal in Germany, where landfill has been banned since 2005. Germany has a recycling rate of 48%, plus almost 19% composting and 31% incineration for energy generation. Only just over 1% is classed as hazardous waste. In this respect, Germany is significantly cleaner than other countries.
We always try to reuse a lot of things before we throw them away. For example, we had an old fence that we used to build our compost heap and a few raised beds. All our organic waste goes into the compost, which we reuse. We also have 3 organic waste bins, which are usually full in the spring and autumn with leaves that are not suitable for compost, such as climbing plants and fir greenery.
We also give away things that we have no use for. From time to time we also try to sell things, but mostly we give them away. We have already used the items and are happy when someone enjoys them again.

In dieser Hinsicht ist Deutschland deutlich sauberer als andere Länder.
Wir versuchen immer, vieles wiederzuverwenden, bevor wir es wegwerfen. Zum Beispiel hatten wir einen alten Zaun, aus dem wir unseren Komposthaufen und ein paar Hochbeete gebaut haben. Unser ganzer Biomüll kommt in den Kompost, den wir wiederverwenden. Wir haben auch 3 Biotonnen, die sind meistens im Frühjahr und im Herbst voll mit Blättern, die nicht für den Kompost geeignet sind, wie zum Beispiel von Kletterpflanzen und Tannengrün.
Wir verschenken auch Sachen, für die wir keine Verwendung haben. Ab und zu versuchen wir auch zu verkaufen, aber meistens verschenken wir die Sachen. Wir haben die Sachen schon benutzt und freuen uns, wenn jemand wieder Freude daran hat.
