I had Lasik Surgery: my personal experience

in #blog8 years ago

My vision started deteriorating when I was just ten years old. At the time, I was devastated. None of the other kids in my class had poor vision and I hated the way glasses looked. I thought glasses were for nerds. Like every other little girl I wanted to be a Barbie, not a Velma Dinkley. My family was very religious, so every day I would ask Jesus to perform a miracle and heal my eyes. Predictably enough, nothing happened. The thought of sticking my fingers in my eyes to put on contact lenses horrified me, and so I went through my teenage years wearing glasses.

Glasses made me feel inferior to other girls. They had other downsides, of course. They can't be worn underwater, they fog up if it's too humid outside, losing them means having to look for them with blurry vision, you look silly if you wear 3D glasses over them and you always have to be careful not to break them.

When I became old enough to get laser surgery on my eyes, I was ecstatic. It was a very simple procedure. I laid conscious on a chair while the surgeon prodded my eyes with various instruments. Fifteen minutes later, it was over. I would never have to wear glasses again.

I never regretted my choice. My eyes are a lot drier than they used to be, but besides that, the surgery has improved my life a great deal.
