Why Is it So Hard to Be Consistent? A Lack of Focus; A Personal Struggle.

What Is "Being Consistent"?

To be consistent is to be able to Focus our Mental Attention on a certain activity, without getting interrupted by other stimuli.

  • In other words: To obtain Consistency we have to first Be able to Focus our Mental Attention.
  • In one word: FOCUS

People with this lack of focus are today labelled as having a mental disorder, known as ADHD.

In my eyes, it's not a illness, it's just not being trained in the skill of Focus.
But with proper training, everyone can do it. It's a skill, and like every skill in this world, it can be trained.

Trained Not To Focus

I think the main problem it's the 21st century Educational system.

To speak from my personal experience, I grew up in a little village in Romania called Todiresti, and we used to have 6 or 7 hours of lesson everyday except Saturday and Sunday. And every hour there will be a different teacher with a different subject to discuss.

Can you Imagine what that does to a growing child's Mind?
And although that's a big part of the problem, there is more. Just look around our world! There's so many things to get distracted by. Everything, everywhere just screams for our attention. From the amazing video-games out there to the natural human needs of sexuality, hunger, etc. And we're social animals, we have a need to interact with other individuals from our own species.
And even though some of these things are nice and good to engage in, they can all be used as excuses to get distracted from our main activities on which we want to focus.

Focus: A Skill To Be Trained

The ability to focus isn't something which we're born with or we're not. It's like painting, we either know how to paint, or we learn how to paint.
There are several ways to improve our ability to Focus. I will share two of the main activities that help me:

1.Meditation

Everyone who even remotely looks into the self-help material that's out there, they will eventually run into MEDITATION, which can be of great aid in our Focus training.
There are so many definitions, styles and techniques of Meditation that I would need a whole post dedicated to them. To me, Meditation is the activity of turning our attention away from the physical stimuli (get Relaxed) and Focus on One Thing only, whatever we choose that thing to be.
I don't think our Mind is able to not think at all, that's not how it works, but if we direct it to focus on one thing only, then it won't be able to come up with 10 thousand other thoughts.

2.Goal-Setting

This is another great activity to engage in. As the Psilocybin mushrooms said through Mr. Terence McKenna (the handsome fella in the Meditation photo):

“If you don't have a plan, you become part of somebody else's plan.”

If we don't plan anything and don't set any goals for ourselves, we will just pass through life without ever achieving anything of major importance. We will find ourselves be pushed by the status quo in whichever direction it blows.
So, setting goals and making plans helps tremendously with our ability to Focus on that which we desire to focus.

Let's claim back Our Own Mind and Use It Whoever WE Want to Use It
