Inventors who lived to regret their inventions

in #blog7 years ago (edited)

Have you ever looked at a thing and wondered who and how it might have been invented? The sophisticated life that we are living today is contributed by a multitude of inventions over the centuries. Nevertheless there are such inventions from ingenious minds that have changed the face of the world forever in an irreversible way that have left them in a grave regret for inventing them.
Here is a list of ten inventors who lived to regret their own inventions.

  1. Anna Jarvis (Mother’s Day):

    Mother’s day was invented to recognize and appreciate mothers, motherhood, maternal bonds and the positive contributions made by a woman as a mother to the society. Yearly, Americans spend approximately $2.6 billion on flowers, $1.53 billion on other gifts like pampering gifts (e.g. spa treatment) and $68 million on greeting cards. However, the uber-commercialization of a well-intended gesture meant to honor all mothers infuriated Jarvis.

  2. Robert Porpst (The office cubicle):

    The office cubicle is the concept of isolating separate work spaces by partitions so that the office workers are not distracted by the sight and noises of each other while working. However, Companies bastardized the original cubicle idea, leading Propst to call them "monolithic insanity".

  3. Victor Gruen(The shopping mall):

    Austrian born architect first ever designed the shopping malls. Malls designed to mimic town squares with shops and schools, Gruen despised what malls eventually became.

  4. John Sylvan(The Keurig K-Cup):

    While first inventing the single-use coffee pods, John Sylvan didn’t even like coffee but drank 30 to 40 cups a day in order to create a better customizable, and liberating coffee experience than any other. But years after his invention, he came to realization of what he had done. As of today 10 billion non bio-degradable K-Cups clutter landfills, streams and ponds which left him remorseful for his own invention.

  5. Philo Farnsworth(The television):

    Farnsworth invented the world’s first working all-electric television system. It stood as a grand achievement in the field of communication. Television was meant to be an educational tool but Farnsworth eventually saw it as a time-wasting monster for everyone.

  6. Sir Tim Berners-Lee(The HTTP forward slashes (//):

    Also known as TimBL, is an English engineer and computer pioneer. He is the inventor of World Wide Web (www). Internet pioneer Berners-Lee thinks his '//' in web domains is an unnecessary and useless time waster.

  7. Orville Wright(Co-inventor of airplane):

    Orville Wright worked side by side with his brother Wilbur Wight to invent the world’s first flying successful airplane. It was one of the biggest breakthrough in the field of aviation and transportation. However, Wright brothers didn’t envision the airplane as a weapon. The role it played in causing death and destruction in both world wars horrified him.

  8. Alfred Nobel(Dynamite):

    The inventor of this deadly explosive that could bring down anything from big mountains to lives was one of the exceptional inventor, engineer, chemist, businessman and a philanthropist. Nobel created the Peace Prize that bears his name out of guilt for his deadliest invention: dynamite given the fact that it could kill many at a time and at a faster rate. He was disappointed with how he would be remembered.

  9. J. Robert Oppenheimer(The Atomic Bomb):

    After the invention of such a massively destructive weapon, the father of atom bomb promptly saw the aftermath and consequences which could not be underestimated in any ways. Oppenheimer Speaking to Harry Truman in 1945, Oppenheimer confessed:"Mr. President, I feel I have blood on my hands."

  10. Mikhail Kalashnikov(The AK-47):

    A Russian general, inventor, military engineer, writer and arms designer invented one of the world’s most feared weapons of all time, AK-47. 250,000 people die yearly from AK-47 wounds. Before his death Kalashnikov wrote saying he felt responsible for all the deaths caused by the weapons he created.

As we drift along with the swift development of science and technology with every another passing seconds, we don’t know what the future holds for the fate of Humanity.
