"Internet of Us"

In my blog posts I would like to write some about decentralization and their applications.

Do you like decentralized rebellion?

Enter the Firechat.

Firechat is a peer-to-peer messaging application that allows users to send messages  for free, without the use of Internet service providers  or telecom companies by creating a local decentralized network.  While the distance of the signal is only 200 meters, the more phones are connected to the network the bigger it becomes. The idea is that each device serves as a node that can receive or forward messages so they can travel from one phone to the other.

It has no central point of failure, so during protests or demonstrations the government, if they want to interfere with the communications,  would be forced to shut down each node one at a time. Which is practically impossible. It was effectively used in the 2014 Hong Kong protests  in China to bypass the Great Firewall. Decentralized rebellion at its finest.

The app can be found here https://www.opengarden.com/firechat.html

The amazing thing about decentralized applications is that the more people use them, the more powerful they become and this way they allow us to set ourselves free, to help connect to each other person to person and get rid of the middle man.

Peace
