WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

Wow, just wow.

Here at Joe and Josh Talk, we love all things related to The Walking Dead. This includes its companion show, Fear the Walking Dead.

While this show does have a big shadow to stand in, the third season has been nothing short of a thrill ride. From big changes in the plot to improvements in pacing, the show has outdone itself and exceeded our expectations. Here are five ways Fear the Walking Dead has surprised us.

05 – Character Deaths

The creators of TWD aren’t shy about having their characters make hasty (and often heartbreaking) exits from the show. It’s a bittersweet tactic that adds a touch of realism to the experience and provides the unpredictability viewers look for.
Seeing Travis fly out of the helicopter was a sad moment, and one that showed the showrunners aren’t afraid to axe main characters.

04 – New Locations

Every show needs to keep things fresh if they want to retain viewers’ interest. Broke Jaw Ranch is just the type of large, densely inhabited, secure location the series needed to keep things moving.

While it has been established the area was built as a place to survive the fall of democracy and not the apocalypse, the ranch gives us a new hub area to work with and provides a solid foundation for moving storylines forward.

03 – Gore

Admit it – one of the reasons you watch The Walking Dead is for the gore. While a small portion of viewers may watch for other reasons and turn their head during the gross-out moments, most of us love it when the showrunners dabble in the dark and disturbing.

So far in the third season of Fear the Walking Dead, we’ve seen a soldier get pulled through the wall by walkers, a crow eating a half-dead man’s brains, and a man getting a spoon jabbed into his eye (Madison, you’re hardcore and we love you). The showrunners clearly aren’t scared to push the envelope and are pulling out all the stops.

02– New Conflicts

It wouldn’t be a great fictional drama without conflict. Whether it’s the soldier who almost became a pirate at the hands of Madison or the ever-enigmatic Strand struggling to make friends, the show has plenty of controversial characters and tense situations.

While some of the characters are a far cry from where they were in previous seasons in terms of development and personalities, their arcs have been handled with care and it is interesting to see where they are now.

01 – The Return of Familiar Faces

The showrunners taketh away, and the showrunners giveth. While we lost Travis and others in these first few episodes, we’ve also seen the return of Daniel. This shows us a couple things. The first is that the show pays attention to detail, and the other is that more returns may be possible in the future.

In TWD, returns are common. Morgan, Merle, and others popped back into the show after a season or more away. It seems the companion show is learning a thing or two, and they’re keeping us invested. It’s always big news when a character we haven’t seen in a while shows back up. Ofelia, we’re still holding out for you!
