The Iron Lady of Indian sports - Deepa Malik

Today man and woman walk on the same track, what men can do women can do better. On the contrary, they have moved one step further in every field, they do not shy away to compete with men. Many women from India have achieved so much recognization that no man would have even dreamt off. Women like Saina Nehwal (Badminton) and Sania Mirza (Tennis) have set high standards in world sports and both have been ranked number one in their respective sports.

But one woman, who in spite of being disabled has made a big name in the world of sports, and she is none other than - Deepa Malik, the Indian athlete who has been paralyzed from the waist down. Since then she has been in the wheelchair. She is not only an athlete but also a biker and swimmer, who has set several national records.

Deepa Malik has was interested in sports since childhood but gave up everything for her family and two daughters. It was at the time of her second pregnancy, despite getting the best medical treatment she was paralyzed. At that moment she received lots of support from her near and dear ones and she took up to sports again. Being a mother and at the age of 36, it was very difficult task for her, but what she did is history. Not only her hard work and day to day training made her strong, she was well supported by her family and two daughters.

Deepa Malik, holds the record of having won more than 50 gold medals at the national level and more than 10 gold medals at the International level, this is a big task for anyone, as people with two hands and two legs have not achieved, what Deepa Malik has achieved without her legs, sitting on wheelchair. She is also the first and only Indian woman to win a medal at the Rio Paralympics 2016 when she won a Silver medal in the shot put event.

Today at the age of 46, when most of the sportsmen would have already retired from sports, Deepa Malik has become an inspiration for many. When you decide to achieve something, there is nothing that can stop you, and Deepa Malik is a perfect example. She did not allow her disability overcome her, she fought against all odds and today her name appears in several records books at National and International level.

Achievements:

  • Only Indian woman to win a Silver medal for Shot Put at Paralympics games in 2016.

  • Silver medal at the Asian Para Games for Javelin throw in 2014.

  • Gold medal at the Asian championships Dubai, 2016.

  • Gold Medals for Javelin & Discus throw at the Malaysian Open Athletics Championship April 2012.

  • Three Gold Medals for Shot-put, Discuss, and Javelin throw at the England Championship in 2010.

  • Silver medal in swimming (Backstroke) at Kuala Lumpur 2006.

Winning so many medals is a big achievement for anyone, but when a person like Deepa Malik achieved it, it is something extraordinary. She had achieved all this without her legs - A grand salute to the iron lady of Indian sports.
