<All about Uganda #9: Managing a Young Population>
Hello, STEEMIT Community!
Last time, we learned about Uganda’s comparatively young population. Today, let’s talk about what the advantages/disadvantages are!
A country with a young average population, like Uganda, benefits from these:
- An abundance of opportunities to build an educated and civilized community
- A chance to provide a market that encourages manufacturing
- An abundant base for national taxation due to the large workforce present
- A large population to vote
As shown above, a young population can be a great benefit! However, the country must manage its infrastructure well to take advantage of it.
If the country fails to take advantage of its young population, problems can occur:
- High probability of having a high unemployment rate
- Difficulty in operating an effective education system
- The lack of jobs creating more poverty
- Cheap labor causing increased prices
- A lack of access to healthcare
Currently, the government of Uganda is working with UNDP to improve the access to healthcare and education. What other benefits of a young population can you think of?
