I Lost Some Followers. Should I Care?

Last night, before I went to bed, I took one final look at my Steemit profile page and took note that I had 41 followers. Fast forward 12 hours and I am no down to 39. This is not the first time I have lost followers and, much like the previous times, I took it personally. I could not help but wonder what I did wrong or what caused them to leave.

I mean, the content I upload has not changed much. Maybe a little bit as I find my audience and platform, but not much. For all intents and purposes, my posts are still very much me, whatever that may mean. I am still trying to be original in my material and I do my best to try and make sure that my posts have a modicum of quality attached to them. I may not always succeed but I still give it a proper go.

I kept racking my mind to try and find the answer when eventually I did. The answer was simple and straightforward, do not care. The chances are good that those who followed and left were of the same breed as those who constantly go around thinking if they follow someone, they are entitled to a return follow. They then noticed that I did not follow them back so they unfollowed me.

They got it all wrong, unfortunately. You are never entitled to followers just because you followed them. You get followers by creating content from which they can extract value, whether it be financial value, intellectual value, emotional value or whatever. People who do follows-for-follows just end up with a bunch of zombie followers who never upvote, comment or engage with their posts at all. Effectively, you do not really have followers. You just have a bunch of followers who are trying to use you for their own gains.

So I guess I did not really lose 2 followers. My follower count just went down to its true number. And from here on out I will focus less on how many followers I lose and more on the content I create. As they say, if you build it, they will come.
