New Social Media vs Old

in #blog7 years ago

So I'm here on a new social media network & it made me think about how may social media formats I've been on over the years...

Who recalls MSM Pages or the MySpace & it's many imitators?

I think it's interesting how over the years social media has grown bigger in some respects but in others it's gotten rather dull.

MSM Pages, Instant Messengers, ChatRooms, the old Yahoo Groups & MySpace all allowed for us to connect around the topics that we enjoyed but they also allowed us to be Creative & Expressive... there was even a time when YouTube had much more creativity allowed in how your own page was presented... now well we're all pretty much regulated into "Sameness" a bit boring Pick a photo for the profile & then a 2nd for a header might be allowed but the remainder of the space is dictated into total control & bland sameness...

Oh yes with all the new technology there are now funny gifs & lots of videos but gone are the individuality of the creators in presenting & showcasing their creations... or of just the people who are surfing through there is not much for personal creativity on a social site. Am I complaining... sorta kinda yes sorta kinda no. I'm just going down memory lane & not everything new is better & not everything old is out of date & needing to be tossed out... Maybe wishing for somehow the best of both worlds in an utopian social media world?

Gone are the Fun "TV Style" videocasts that were the mainstay of BlogTV which shut down much to the dismay of both the viewers as well as the show hosts who were transitioned over to YouNow(?) or some such name which just didn't appeal to those who were used to having the ability to have scheduled programming for an hour or more...

GoogleBuzz was a fun community but when it was switched over to G+ there was a disconnect of many who were suddenly forced to give up monikers that they had been using for years across other social media services. It was a mix of uproar & fun with the addition of G+ Hangouts on Air with a panel discussion ability of 10 people but then came the integration with G+ & YouTube... but that will be for another post

Blab, Tsu & so many other social forums on various topics too numerous to count have risen only to disappear for whatever reasons...

My questions for you dear reader are

Which social media services were your first into the foray of the wild & free internet?

Which social media services do you wish were still around?

Do you miss the former creativity that the less techy social media sites had or do you prefer the new social media options which although new in tech ability lack the creative expressions that the older social media sites had?
