The story of "Stingy Jack" is one of the most famous legends associated with the history of Halloween. This tale, originating from Irish folklore, tells of a man named Jack, a cunning and deceitful farmer also known as "Stingy Jack" or "Jack of the Lantern."

According to the story, Jack was so skilled in trickery that he managed to deceive the devil himself. One day, Jack met the devil and decided to outsmart him in order to keep his soul safe from hell. Jack tricked the devil into turning into a coin to pay for their drinks at a tavern. Once the devil had transformed into a coin, Jack quickly placed it in his pocket next to a silver cross, preventing the devil from changing back into his original form.

Eventually, the devil agreed to make a deal with Jack, promising that he would never take Jack's soul to hell. But when Jack died, he was not allowed to enter heaven due to his sinful life, nor could he enter hell because of his pact with the devil. Instead, Jack was condemned to wander in darkness for eternity, carrying a glowing coal inside a hollowed-out turnip (which was later replaced by pumpkins in the United States) to light his way.

Since then, Jack’s glowing light became known as the "Jack o' Lantern." This legend became a Halloween tradition, with people carving scary faces into pumpkins and lighting them as a reminder of Jack's lost soul and to ward off evil spirits.
