Picking Berries

in #blueberries5 years ago (edited)

One of the many things we did this long weekend was to go blueberry picking. Haven't been berry picking for years and thought why not do something different. Blueberries grow wild in the forests north of the city but the farm makes it so much easier and as a plus, there are no bears!

We bought a couple of buckets and weren't really thinking things through, the berries grew thick on the bushes so we quickly filled up our pails. They charge by the pound and we got around 10 lbs of berries, it wasn't the plan to get that many but they probably won't go to waste.

There were rows and rows of berry bushes, some of the rows ripen every day/week all summer. There were lots of people picking berries and the farm was making a killing. Our strategy was simple, fill the buckets as quickly as possible and get to the golf course. We were just grabbing them by the handful and checking to make sure there weren't any green ones in there.

You can see the rows of berry bushes. I didn't ask but because they weren't advertising, the berries likely aren't organic; they probably aren't GMO-free either, who knows, who cares, they taste fine. The wild ones are better but it would take five times as long to get as many. About half-way through our picking a strange sound starting playing from a speaker, it sounded like a bird of prey-probably used to scare away berry eating birds. There was a guy there with a falcon but it wasn't being used to hunt birds, it was for photo-ops.

After picking berries and playing golf, we went to a relatives house and traded half our berries for a berry pie. Tomorrow we will make some blueberry jam and in a week or two, we're going to be sick of blueberries. Next time I'd like to go pick raspberries or wild strawberries.

It's great to get out of the city once and a while, can't wait for holidays at the end of the month. We did a lot this weekend and made the most out of it. Hope you all had a great time too!
