DISTRESS CALL: Please Don’t Skip

in #boc3 months ago

This is to you whose heart beats with empathy and kindness. If you are moved by the suffering of others, kindly lend a hand.

This plea is coming from Nigeria, in West Africa, where the people in power have turned against the masses, maiming them with all state instruments. The hostility in the land is orchestrated by the many government-sponsored terrorist organizations, one of which is Boko-Halam. And all these are not without far-reaching consequences. Farmers can no longer go to farm without being killed or raped. There is severe hunger in the country because farm produce has significantly reduced.

Nigeria seems to regress everyday - latest plunge being the forceful SELECTION of a drug baron, who is also guilty of identity theft and certificate forgery, as number one citizen of the country through a tsunamic rigging assault.

We really had high hopes in the build up to the 2023 general election, thinking that an opportunity had presented itself to change the dynamics of the country. It was a choice between light and darkness. A vast majority of Nigerians chose light even in the face of brutal intimidation. We were dying to experience it for the first time but the electoral umpire felt we were asking for too much. They gave us darkness instead.

Some of us have chosen to tell our plight to whoever that cares to lend an ear because millions are kissing their graves untimely through starvation. Should the rest of us go that route, the saner world may condemn our silence in near future.

In a country where a bag of rice sells for roughly N90k ($54), the minimum wage for workers is still pegged at N30k ($18). After the recent protest by workers for an increment, the government promised to raise the minimum wage to N70k but up till this moment, that promise has not been redeemed. This minimum wage is for the few lucky ones that found a job. In the same country, however, low ranked senators go home with as much as N40m ($24240) every month. The contrast is mind boggling.

So far, Tinubu has reacted in a manner that says: if I can pay so much money to rig myself in, I'll punish you all for putting me through the stress. His first official announcement, on the very first day he assumed office as the president, was the removal of fuel subsidies.

Less than 24 hours after that announcement, the price of petrol flew from N198/liter to almost N800/liter, accompanied by a serious scarcity. We rely on fuel for our day to day business operations as power supply is sheer luxury. We could go weeks without power supply. Now, fuel has gone beyond our reach, forcing small businesses such as mine to close down.

The government-sponsored terror groups have killed thousands of people in Benue State and displaced others from their ancestral homes. People are languishing in pain. Starvation and disease have become their daily companion. Since February 2023, I have been providing them with as much assistance as my little means allowed in the areas of medication and feeding. Right now, I am struggling to carry on due to lack of funds.
