Filmography & Acting Career
1988- 1991: Television Debut

Shah Rukh Khan made a grand debut in Television through the serial Fauji in which he played the lead role. The role was enough to put him in the limelight and gave him recognition for his acting skills. Post that, he appeared in serials such as:

Circus
Idiot (mini series)
Umeed
Wagle Ki Duniya

He also appeared in an English language Television film 'In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones'. He was constantly compared with the superstar of that time, Mr.Dilip Kumar, for his acting style. This led to many film offers coming across him but, he refused all of them citing that he was not good enough for films. Such was his greatness and humility that even after comparisons with top actors, he did not get carried away easily with fame and comparisons.

1992: Film Debut

Shah Rukh Khan, changed his earlier decision of not doing any movies and rapidly signed four films to get away from the grief of his mother's death. His debut film was 'Deewana' which released in 1992 but shooting for the film began in 1991 itself. He was seen as a second lead in the film and luckily for him, the film went on to become one of the biggest hits of that time which catapulted him into an overnight superstar. During that period, he did many films with varying roles which the audiences and his fans loved it to the core.

1993- 1994: Villainous Roles

During the period of two years, Khan was seen in movies playing anti-hero roles and aced it to perfection. An obsessive lover in 'Darr' and 'Anjam' and a murderer in ‘Baazigar’, Shah Rukh Khan rose to the every opportunity thrown at him, as he bagged the prestigious Filmfare award for ‘Darr’ and ‘Anjam’ in different categories. He proved to the industry that playing negative roles can also bring one into limelight and it is not necessary to play the role of a hero to win glory and awards. The two awards and his famous dialogue from the movie 'Darr', made him rise many notches as an actor, as compared to his peers during that time.

1995- 1998: Romantic Hero

After playing anti-hero roles, it was only time that people see him in a role of a hero and Aditya Chopra, in his directorial debut 'Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge' cast him as the romantic hero. His performance was lauded both by public and critics. The movie went on to become an all time blockbuster and one of the most loved movies even today. His graph which was zooming till 1995, became stagnant in the year 1996. His films did not get thumbs up from the public and critics. But, he was back with another hit as a hero in Yash Chopra's second directorial film 'Dil To Pagal Hai'. Post that, there was again a lull in his career graph for two years. Subsequently, in the year 1998, he was again seen as a lead actor in the movie ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ and proved everyone that he is one of the most versatile actors to have ever hit the screens.

1999- 2003: Challenges

As with every person, ups and downs are a part and parcel of life and career and so were with Shah Rukh Khan. Although, the good part was that it did not last long. With some poor choice of films and the launch of Hrithik Roshan which made him an instant hero in just one film, Shah Rukh Khan's career was in danger. Many critics found that, his acting lacked some innovation and was similar in all his movies during that time. With health issues cropping up at exactly the same time, it was getting difficult for him. But, he proved it otherwise to many critics and people in general. With the success of 'Mohabbatein' and 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham', Shah Rukh changed the course of the wind and defined it as the turning point in his career. In 2002, came his biggest hit in form of 'Devdas', and that became the beginning point of his resurgence as an actor.

2004- 2009: Resurgence

With 3 superhits films, 'Main Hoon Na', 'Veer-Zaara' and 'Swades' along with a different role in each of them, Shah Rukh Khan garnered praise from all the nooks and corner. Some of the critics even went to the extent to say that, his role in 'Swades' is still the best till date and is also included in Filmfare's 2010 issue of Bollywood's Top 80 Iconic Performances. Soon he was seen as a hockey coach of a women's hockey team in 'Chak De! India', where his performance was above excellence. Then came an opportunity to play a dual role in 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi', where he again proved and stayed true to his acting abilities.

2010- Till Now: Growing, growing and growing...

Since 2010, Shah Rukh Khan has slowed down due to his injuries and other health issues when it comes to acting in films. He did films and roles of various hues and genre, starting with 'My Name Is Khan', and then a science fiction film titled 'Ra.One'. Later, he was seen in 'Don 2' and 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan', playing contrasting roles that of a villain and a lover with élan. Post that, he was seen in comedy films, 'Chennai Express' and 'Happy New Year', both of which became commercially successful. Recently, he was seen in the film 'Dilwale' which is said to be one of his biggest mistakes in his career. However, the film went on to become financially profitable.
