Year One is a story by Nora Roberts and is completely different than any story I associate with her. This is the first book in a series that is dystopian in nature...and the first book I’ve ever read from her. Granted, I’m still in the middle of reading it but, it’s so good that I decided to go ahead and talk about it a bit.
The book begins with a family get together on a farm in Scotland. The middle-aged twin brothers are on a hunting trip and catch a bird. The only problem is that the bird lands on an enchanted area that sets off the world’s next plague - a plague that has, by the end of chapter six, has killed between a billion and a half and two billion people around the world. Government leaders are dying, governments can’t handle it, science/medical organizations are rounding up people who seem to be immune to study them, and the world is descending into chaos and lawlessness. Many of the the people who seem to be immune have realized that they are being gifted with magical powers and must protect themselves at all cost.
This book has snagged my attention from the first page and I am now beginning to understand why Nora Roberts is such a successful author.
