The Power, by Naomi Alderman - Flash Review

in #books7 years ago

Possibly one of the most talked about books over the past year, The Power imagines a world where women have the ability (or Power) to generate electricity from their bodies. This power leads to a global revolution and the rise of the matriarchy.

Without giving too much away the story leads us to believe that what has taken place is in the past and is now being studied as an uncertain decade in history. The premise is strong and fascinating, what would happen if women became more powerful than men. Essentially, it could be seen as an exploration of gender and inequality. Fortunately, there's an interesting fictional narrative to carry this theory through, seen through the eyes of four characters.

While I enjoyed this book from start to finish, I struggled with a few moments throughout, and some readers may find the ending quite unsatisfactory - but I believe that's the point! I may not agree with Alderman's theory about a matriarchal system, but that didn't get in the way of my appreciating her exploration of this world she created.

This book was November/December's choice for Emma Watson's Our Shared Shelf book club. If you haven't heard of it, check it out here: https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/179584-our-shared-shelf

It was hard to write any more about this book without giving much away, so all I can say is read it.
4/5 stars from this reader!
