Hobbit Character Analasys
Throughout the fantastical story The Hobbit, the main character (Bilbo Baggins) has had many very different changes to his life. Bilbo is independant, simple, and respectful at the beginning of the story. But that doesn't stay the same for long.
At first, Bilbo Baggins was an ordinary Hobbit living in his ordinary hobbit-hole. Before his amazing adventure, he was very simple. He had almost no interaction with others, Reads everyday, and doesn't get stressed in life. Bilbo lives an easy simple life. Other than being simple he was also independent. He is independent because he lives all alone. No wife. No kids. No friends. He lost his respect for the neighbors and no one really liked him that much.So he is what you call some a “loner” Even though Bilbo had lost his respect. He is still a very respectful character. He has great manners. Every Time he meets someone, he greets them with a “good morning” When he saw Gandalf one day he greeted him with “good morning”. He uses that phrase for a lot of things. So far you can see Bilbo Baggins as a very ordinary hobbit that lives a normal life.
In the middle of the story, Bilbo goes new places and meets new people. And with people, events are caused. So when Bilbo is on his great adventure he is getting to know more about the great wizard Gandalf. What he doesn't know is that Gandalf is changing his entire life. Gandalf changes Bilbo’s life because he takes him on an adventure with 12 dwarves. On the adventure, Gandalf leaves Bilbo and the dwarves on their own most of the time. He does this because he wants to make Bilbo stronger. Gandalf is a wizard. He could of did some magic trick and took all of them to the top of the mountain. But he leaves them alone so they can understand and learn more about their lives and what they could do. Gandalf enjoyed Bilbo. “You are a fine person, Mr.Baggins, and i am very fond of you; but you are only quite a little fellow in a wide world after all!” says Gandalf to Bilbo. That shows Gandalf really likes Bilbo and believes he can do a lot in his life. Going on to events. An event bilbo faces that changes him throughout the story is when he finds the ring. Bilbo is one night lost from the dwarves and Gandalf in a cave, and is crawling around and finds a ring. A magic ring. Bilbo actually doesn't know it is magic until later on. This ring made his whole adventure a lot easier. It helps him later that night escape gollum and then escape the spiders. The ring changed Bilbo because it made him feel like a hero. Not only to himself, but also to the dwarves.
By the end of this novel, Bilbo has had most of his final changes. He has became very wise. All throughout the story, making decisions is probably the hardest thing for Bilbo to do. Not only decide them, but they had to be decided wisely. For example, a time Bilbo has had to make a wise decision is when to use the ring or not. Bilbo can't just use the ring every time he is in trouble. The ring helps him only to escape. He had to think about the dwarves too. This shows that Bilbo is protective of the dwarves. Speaking of protective, that is one of the changes that has happened to Bilbo. Bilbo has been through so much in this adventure. Those things made him feel like he is the caretaker of everyone. After so much keeping the dwarves safe, he feels he is the caretaker of them. It made him feel in charge for once in his life. So Bilbo has became somewhat of a so called “Bossypants” The last change that probably explains Bilbo completely at the end of the story is heroic. Bilbo is heroic because he did what no other Hobbit has done before. He has fought monsters, escaped them, and also conquered them. He not only kept himself alive but also kept most of the dwarves alive. He did fail on keeping Fili and Kili alive, but he saved at least half of them. But even after all that he still wanted to quit early. “I wish i was in my nice hole next to the fire, with the kettle just beginning to sting.” said Bilbo
So Bilbo Baggins, the former ordinary Hobbit who became a hero, has changed so much throughout the story. Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds, cannot change anything. ~George Bernard Shaw. This quote describes what Bilbo is facing in the adventure. Change happens to Bilbo as a good thing in this story. It unlocked secrets to Bilbo’s life that he would never have had found out if he had never took this adventure.
