The Couple Next Door | #BooksWeRecommend

People are capable of doing anything...

Catchy right? Your mind would be wired up and would make you think of what could possibly gone wrong in this book.

If you have read my last post for #BooksWeRecommend you won' t be surprised that this book will here.

There are a lot of praises made for this book. So you can't imagine how excited I am to have a copy of this one. It was an easy read. I can actually say that because this is one of those books that I was able to finish in one sitting.

So no further ado here are my thoughts for this book.

The book has two central protagonists, Cynthia Conti and Marco Conti who happens to have a child named Cora who's gone missing while they were out having a 'party' with their neighbors named Cynthia and Graham. This is a perfect example of stories that makes me cringe a little. I am so into kids welfare that the first thing that comes to my mind is that how extremely awful parents the protagonists were—'Leave your kids unattended to have a good time!?

A missing child could only mean a lot of investigation and all, so here comes the character of Detective Rasbach and Jenning, and my bad for expecting an 'Alex Cross' type of detective in this book and because of this I was truly disappointed. Their characters and personalities were so dull that I wasn't able to have any personal connection to their characters. What they actually did in the book was just to interview, do some basic standards and interview once again. There's nothing major for something so extreme—a six-month old child was missing!

As the story goes on, there's a lot of twists and mysteries being presented and revealed. For most of it I can feel that I was deliberately being forced to believe a certain premise that makes it almost obvious that I was being fed with faulty assumptions. It was so complex that you have to put so much attention into details just so you'll get a grip of what's happening in the story as it progresses. I must insert here, that this is the first time I read a book were I despise all the characters—except Cora.

And the ending? Who do such kind of endings?! It felt like I was being dragged down by an unknown and was left to die. It was annoyingly unrealistic.

Yes, I know it sounds like this book is unrecommendable...

But don't get me wrong. Don't let my thoughts put you off. Maybe I just have a unique thirst for suspense.

So yes, I still recommend this for those readers who love intricate, complex twists and/or for those who loves fast-paced intense reads and/or for those who were exceedingly curious with an I-had-to-know-attitude, this book could be for you.

Go on. After all it won't be a Sunday Times Bestseller, and “The most talked-about thriller of the year [2016] for nothing.

“Everyone is faking it, all of them pretending to be something they’re not. The whole world is built on lies and deceit.” ― Shari Lapena
