Legacies

It was inevitable that the next boxer from the Philippines who displayed any sort of potential, would automatically be cast into the spotlight and compared to the Great Manny Pacquiao, and those whispers from the dark corners of the boxing community which began a while ago, are now beginning to gather volume. Anacajas has been crowned the next Manny Pacquiao. Its a blessing and a curse. The blessing is that your name rings out and brings with it a certain level of prestige and of course Manny's huge fan base, The curse is that everything you do no matter how good or improved it might be, will be heavily scrutinized and compared to the achievements of a man who is almost incomparable.

Jerwin Ancajas, like Pacquaio, comes from the Philippines and has a impoverished upbringing, he is a boxer that has improved the quality of life through his dedication to the sport. This is where the comparison ends. When I heard their was a new Manny Pacquiao on the scene, I couldn't wait to see him fight, as Pacquiao is a very exciting fighter. Stylistically the two fighters are nothing alike, Ancajas is much more in the cast of a typical boxer Puncher, whereas Pacquiao has an unusual high paced, perpetual movement, whirlwind style that is completely unique to himself.

The 22-year-old Santiago, of Tijuana, Mexico, has quick footwork and lighting fast hands and a great boxing brain. Although his his record is less impressive than that of reigning champion Ancajas, two of the four draws on his record are questionable l, and it could easily be argued that he won both his battles against Porto Rican fighter Jose "Chiquiro" Martinez, elevating his record to 18-2-2. The durable Alejandro has never been stopped in his 22 fight career.

This is a huge step up in class for Santiago, and I fear it may be a step too far, too fast. Ancajas should be in for a tough night and get a reasonable amount of rounds under his belt, but he should prove to be too much for the game Santiago.

The referee is ready, the judges are ready, and the fighters are in the ring... and now fight fans....
