The Taunton sleeping car fire tragedy took place in the early hours of July 6 1978 – killing 12 people, injuring a further 15 and having far-reaching effects for British Rail.
An investigation discovered that the blaze was caused by an electric heater – despite earlier reports of a discarded cigarette - which had been obstructed by sacks of dirty bed linen, causing it to overheat.
