Four Pet Rabbits : An update - 6 June 2024

You might recall I wrote about some new rabbits that my friends got for free. I haven’t been able to go and see them but they’ve given me a couple of photos to share with you.

The rabbits are now well established in their new abode. They are gentle and get close to get their ‘pellet snacks’ - they haven’t been given any names. They have a much bigger area where they live, are getting nice grass and pellets everyday to aid their nutrition.

Above you can see a photo of one of their rabbit hutches. They tell me that the chickens and cockerel tend to mess it all up so they need to rethink where to put it and perhaps move the chickens elsewhere :

Two of the four culprits..

The original rabbit hutch is surrounded by a structure made up of chipboard and a palette making the whole structure very sturdy. They also put some proper roofing felt to keep it as dry as possible. They still think they may need to build another structure particularly if baby rabbits come on the scene.

I’ve been looking on You Tube to see whether there are any options they can build easily. They told me they want to include an area for when it rains or at least off the ground so they don’t get too muddy. I thought it would be easy to find an easy-to-build rabbit hutch, but there are so many and they don’t look that easy !

So far I would recommend this video but I’m sure they’ll think it’s beyond their carpentry level :

I like this tractor idea because it is quite rough and ready in terms of construction. As it incorporates wheels my friends can move the rabbit hutch around their enclosure, but I’m not so sure how heavy the whole thing is. In the video he pulls it with his van. I’ve sent them that video anyway to give them some ideas.

In the meantime the rabbits will just spend their time free range or in their two hutches.

Apart from grass and the pellet snacks the rabbits love getting fresh leaves. In the photo below you can see the same friendly rabbit enjoying a little branch of spinach leaves :
