Zig Zag Sock Rethink - Bee Cafe - 3 June 2024

Today I bring you two updates :

Firstly, a few days ago I wrote a post about Bee Day. On that day I couldn’t take a good enough photo of a flying bee, but I said that everyday is Bee Day.

I didn’t have to wait that long to find another bee ‘in distress’. I took fast action : got an unused coffee stirrer that I was keeping for some crafty activity, found some liquid honey in the cupboard and offered a drop to the latest small bumble bee looking dishevelled.

The photo below clearly shows you how close it let me get to it. I think you can also see that the bee looked a bit wet. It was cold and drizzly that day (there have been many of those days lately).

I choose to believe that this small bee enjoyed the snack and was able to fly away soon afterwards.

Perhaps I should start a ‘Bee Cafe’ : All Bees Welcome !

The second update is about the new pair of socks I'm trying to start. I think that this project is aptly described as Zig Zag not for the yarn ‘design’ because I still can’t find any zig zags but really for my level of disappointment. I started ‘down’ when I realised the price of the yarn. I went ‘up’ in excitement when I realised the yarn was good quality and mostly wool. Today I’m ‘down’ again after knitting a mini swatch with the recommended needle size, 3.25mm.

The result in the photo below looks very uneven; my knitting is not perfect but I always endeavour to knit neatly (I’ve tried to show how uneven the stitches look by tweaking the contrast level).

Worse still the photo below shows you how thin and ‘transparent’ it is.

All this clearly shows that the yarn is too thin for the gauge of the knitting needle. If it was a scarf, it wouldn’t be that bad because you normally wear a scarf ‘doubled up’ in thickness. A thinner knitting piece would make the ‘drape’ of the garment lighter too. These points do not really apply to socks where durability is a big issue.

I will try a different needle size later, but this makes me seriously question that ‘free’ pattern.

Thank you for reading !
